If you join the ASV you can rent a Dobsonian for next to nothing. But not very good for photography though.

Come along to the star party, you can ask a million questions and see lots of different scopes in action.

I've been trying to join the ASV for 4 years. Unfortunately their monthly meeting day was/is the same as my month-end tele-conference with my big kahunas in London & Holland. They refuse to budge on days!
Anyway Sin, for a pleasant weekend away from the heat, dust and locusts of central Vic. You might try the south coast. Wilson's Promontory (Prom) in Gippsland is one of the darkest sites in Australia and the western reaches of the Great Ocean road are equally light-free.

No way - I have lived in Brisbane and Sydney and Melbourne - Victoria is tops! A tad cold in winter though!

That's how I got into astronomy. I had a look through a bunch of scopes including the 25" Obsession but the best part was when a really friendly bloke called Dario showed me heaps of DSO's through his 8" dob.

You drive up Burke St take a sharp left when you get to the end and drive for a few thousand Klm and you've found it
