I see a glow from that star in my M42, a flare like that would worry me especially when you don;t see it till after the run. Looks like flokking the scope didn't work.

This statement is wrong. The link below shows and image taken by Peter Ward with and RCOS telescope not a GSO RC . It exhibits a similar flaring. The flocking did work on the GSO RC. The reflections were circular before, this is a classic flare from an RC.

Even 20-50K telescopes get this flaring. It is not just the GSO versions.

I see it in that image but that doesn't make it the norm. I'm sure you've seen a bucket load of horse heads without flares so what your saying is it's an RC scope phenomenon. FKY?

Like everyone else here I'm waiting to see what these 10" scopes are like. Will they flare as well? Who knows, but I won't be asking the people selling them.

Well if the flaring occurs in an image created by a 20K RCOS and it also occurs in a 2K GSO RC well then I suppose it is par for the course with RC telescopes. Probably the price one pays for sharp optics.

This flaring occurs when a bright star is just inside/outside the cams FOV, I get it with the RC and SCT. Slew around a bright star with continouse short exposures, and youll see the effect very clearly.

I don't get those reflections with the Tak BRC or the TEC180.

On another forum one guy discovered the source of his reflections was the secondary mirror shroud and he flocked it and it handled that.

That was an A&M RC. But perhaps it may be worth doing in case it handles it.

As I recall the RCOS I had didn't do that so perhaps it is on some and not others. The geometry may be different on different models and apertures?

Greg.

Amazing! Light doesn't diffract in these telescopes?

Paul, I suspect this is simply a matter of getting a few more hours under your belt with the new camera. Good advice provided by others to get you on your way. Nothing can replace experience. Will keep an eye on your developments.

Jason that is exactly how I am treating all of this. I am enjoying learning (some frustration at the start but people pointing me in the right direction and giving advice on some techniques). Each time I learn new aspects of what the camera is going to do eventually. I have learnt a lot already but I can see there is a mountain yet to learn.

To be honest I have been getting a little bored with planetary work and this is now presenting a real challenge and a welcome relief from what I am so accustomed to doing. I can now see that each aspect presents its own challenges.

I am eagerly waiting on the next clear moonless night and I am planning which object I am going to start imaging. I figure I will aim for a 6 hour image at first. That should present enough challenges and enough data to perhaps a much more presentable image.

Thanks all for the great advice and thoughts.
