Hi Randall,

As I mentioned in a previous post I own the Astronomiks UHC and OIII and the DGM Optics NPB (Narrow Pass Band). I only use these filters for visual astronomy.

If you only wish to buy 1 filter it's hard to go past the DGM optics NPB filter at the price. While it is sold as a Narrowband filter it really has a bandpass more along the lines of a modified OIII filter, so effectively it is a hybrid OIII/UHC. While it doesn't work quite as well on a few targets as the specialist OIII or UHC filters, it offers a noticeable improvement on more targets than either filter individually. At the price it is highly recommended.

Have to agree with John B and Darren.

We have an Astronomik UHC and just recently aquired a DGM NPB we've never used a OIII.

The DGM is definately our favourite. Sometimes on certain nebula the UHC is a little dark but the DGM seems to improve nebulosity greatly, darkens lanes without dimming stars it suits our needs perfectly. The vision on the Swan and the Tarantula particularly is simply stunning.

For your interest Dan we posted a "First Light 2" DGM NBP Filter" on the forum on 13.8.06

In our opinion you can't go wrong with a DGM and the low price is an added bonus.

Just an added comment Dan. We would assume that in observations in suburban pollution, if you have good quality EP's (which add more contrast anyway) and a good filter you must improve the nebulosity clarity and contrast of nebula.
