Still here but we have all day to contemplate our doom. I'm off to image Sol, just in case it goes up. I want a record of it. I'll try to get it processed before the shock wave hits.

BTW no large planet in the sky at present. Come on Nibiru show yourself.
Should be Ok you'll have at least 8 minutes

Yeah, I know right.
I took this one under my wing because she is at least looking for some real answers to the pseudo science that the doomsayers are spewing forth.

QUOTE=jjjnettie;927087]I'm in constant contact with a lady in the UK this evening (and have been since november last year) she is so scared for herself and her kids.
I've had to promise to email her at midnight so she knows all is ok.
These damn doomsday nobbers scare mongering people to death.
Every time the media reports a NEO, earthquake, unseasonal weather etc she messages me asking if it's the beginning of the end.
And while WE take it as a joke, there are a lot of people out there who see this pseudo science as the real thing.
There is even a fellow on FB reporting earthquakes all over the globe that he says are happening right now. (that page and all his reports have been reported as spam )
I'm mad, I'm more than mad, I'm ropeable. [/QUOTE]

I've just had a friend tell me his mother was contemplating suicide for herself and her pets.

Got to wonder now what the fallout of this is going to be and how many people will really die over nothing.

"Thanks for your email. I have been selected to join the spaceship prior to the end of the world and will not return to Earth until Monday 7 January 2013."

It is an age old practice to scare the populace with non existent fears. That way it distracts them from reality and the reality of the shysters.

I find it sad that people who deny they were decended from apes act just like apes when danger is real or imagined. They make loud noises and generally jump around to warn all the other apes about the threat or impending doom.

They then get back to throwing their excrement at each other when the danger is over as if nothing has happened!

Sad really!

Bert

My cousins grandson was panicking about this, knows all the web sources etc which he visits daily. I told him only when you can bite yourself on the bum will the world end (fairly overweight kid), seemed to calm him down somewhat though he is probably home practising right now .

Why in the world would someone commit suicide if the world was going to end anyway, makes no sense to me.

As they say in airplane disasters stick your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye

You are welcome Laurie. I decided out of the goodness of my heart to save you all.

I received no renumeration for it. However I may charge you all at the next "end o' the world" event. 'cos' I'm a greeeedy little astronomer geek thingy.

BTW if anyone believes this I want to interest you in a bridge I have to sell.

@ jjj:

Its a shame that some people will believe the utter nonsense that has been conjured up by unscrupulous media and deceitful opportunists. What effect would my ridiculous posts of chanting have on your friend, if she were able to read them? I wonder.

I do have a confession to make. er.. I er ,, didn't do any chanting at all. er.. I will go now, Bye.

Cheers, I look forward to the next one.

The elephant in the room: the old joke that "they'll tax the air we breathe next!" .

The reality: tax the air we breathe out.

I'm assuming that you are referring to the carbon tax and that you're also implicitly trying to convey the notion that it is unjustified...?

In response, I would ask if you would prefer to incur the monetary and social cost intrinsic to your chosen lifestyle, (far greater than the carbon tax) or simply defer the costs/impacts to someone or sometime else?

The Stern report has a fair bit to say on the long term viability of our business as usual economic policy:

Here it is in summary:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stern_Review

The nub of it, here:

Quote:
The Review states that climate change is the greatest and widest-ranging market failure ever seen, presenting a unique challenge for economics.[2] The Review provides prescriptions including environmental taxes to minimise the economic and social disruptions. The Stern Review's main conclusion is that the benefits of strong, early action on climate change far outweigh the costs of not acting.[3] The Review points to the potential impacts of climate change on water resources, food production, health, and the environment[clarification needed]. According to the Review, without action, the overall costs of climate change will be equivalent to losing at least 5% of global gross domestic product (GDP) each year, now and forever. Including a wider range of risks and impacts could increase this to 20% of GDP or more.
The Review proposes that one percent of global GDP per annum is required to be invested in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

Nettie they are protecting their nether regions against being kicked if some nut case decided on suicide-by-police since "the world is ending so it doesn't matter" - shoot up a school until stopped by the SWAT squad.
