Sharpen Focus

More of an experiment than a carefully crafted picture

I took a shot at IISAC one night without checking focus, and it was out of focus but the bloated stars and milky way looked quite nice. I forgot about it, fixed my focus and carried on.

While scrolling through my nightscape images from IISAC the other day, seeing if there was any I hadn't yet processed, I came across this out of focus one again, and switching between the in-focus and out-of-focus shots (taken within 30 seconds of each other) I kind of liked the effect.

So I combined them.

It's not a perfect combine - the trees from the out of focus shot are obviously 'bigger' and I didn't want to mask them totally out, but I think it's an interesting effect

- Large

Thanks for looking.

I like it Mike, the sharpened trees give the image a 3D effect, very creative.

Great effect/experiment Mike, I agree with Jason it gives the foreground a 3d effect. How would it look with the whole in focus image over the out of focus background? would the milky way get the same 3D effect?

It is actually quite nice Mike.
The trees look like a photoshop drop shadow has been applied. I would leave them in.
