50mm nightscapes @ ISO12800

Pushing the 6D to its limits, and it performs very well! Certainly there's some noise at ISO12800 but it cleans up nicely and is very usable!

These nightscapes were taken at ISO12800 with the Canon 6D and 50mm f/1.8 lens @ f/2.2, 10 second exposures, no tracking.

The first is a pano of 4 images, the second is a single image.
The second is of my favourite stump at IISAC, though it's only half the stump it used to be. Part of it has fallen away and it's very precarious now. A drunk cow will certainly knock it over if it's not careful.
The stump itself is a bit out of focus because I was too close to it with the 50mm lens. I was trying to get the stump up in the bulge of the Milky Way.

Hi Mike

The 1st one is my favourite as the overall balance is skewed more towards the skies and Milky Way, with the foreground acting as support, whereas in #2, the foreground is too dominant.

Cheers

Dennis

Thanks guys
Yeh I could probably clone out the power lines but they weren't overly distracting so I left them in

Beautiful photos Mike, your Milky Ways are awesome. I too prefer the 1st image mainly because it's in focus. How far were you from the tree stump?

I downloaded an app to calculate FOV for my photos, really handy. In this instance at 50mm the closest you could get with infinity focus would be approx 4m at f/16.

Thanks Carlos. The app sounds handy. I was probably about 2m from it, but I wasn't using f/16, I was using f/2.2.

I've been pretty slack with my 6D.. can see I'm going to have to pull my finger out. Great images.. amazing capabilities in DSLRs.

And great that IISAC worked out so well for all!
