The Sentinel

A new image from me... finally. And, it's one from the archives.

An arc drawn by the lights of a night flight and a satellite trail are the only human elements in this image -- sentinels sweeping by.

A 15 minute exposure under an almost full Moon, off the north coast of Sydney.

The slight mottling that can been discerned in the top right is the blur of the Milky Way as it rises from the east.

Monotone conversion done in Canon's mighty Digital Photo Professional, and final touchup in Photoshop.

Slightly larger version available here.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
900s f/8.0 @ 17.0mm iso400

Comments, critique, etc., most welcome.

Thanks for looking.

Lovely image H When I first started pointing my camera at the stars I thought that shooting whilst the moon (especially a full one) was out was bad and not worth it. Now I actually look forward to having that natural sky light helping light up the landscape for me. Great use of the conditions mate.

Thanks, guys! Appreciate the kind words.

Greg, we'll have to hook up one of these days and go shooting!

I wish there was more pretty (untouched) landscape here to shoot. There's pretty much nothing around, unfortunately.

Laurie, Darrin, Rolf, and Rick,

Thank you, so much for looking and leaving a comment. I appreciate it.

Rolf, I am going through my back catalog of images and finding stuff to process. My last trip to New Zealand was pretty abysmal (insofar as making images went); each morning and evening was void of clouds which was very, very lame. The images look flat, dull and lifeless. Not worth processing or posting.

I am, however, going to start a new series of images that will be posted without any Photoshop work on them at all. They will be straight out of Canon's Digital Photo Professional after setting white balance and contrast. That's it. I've done a few, and, while I would typically think of them as happy snaps, there's something about them which is quite alluring. Maybe a signature series!

It's a GREAT shot! Really fantastic in fact. Combinations of everything that works so well in a photo.
