Mach1 PE

Well I finally got around to checking and updating the PEC on the Mach1 as I haven't even used it yet - I know why now . Its had a bit of time to settle in so I thought I would do a Pempro run . The pre programed PEC was a total of 5 peak to peak so I thought thats pretty good . I ran 7 cycles to do the new curve and came back with a peak to peak of 3.9 I was pretty impressed with that , so corrected its probably < 1 or bugger all .

Good to know...

I haven't checked my mach 1's pec, but I did some tests the other day and I was getting over a minute unguided at 2200mm fl. I was pretty happy with that.

I might get around to the pec one day.

Roland recommends turning PEC off during autoguiding and setting guiding aggressiveness to 8 if using Maxim - it seems to work - definitely a good starting point.

David yes I saw Rolands recomendation for leaving it off and havent used it yet anyway , I know why i dont really need it now
I find 8 in Maxim way to agressive for me , docs recomend 3 and I find
3.5 gives me best results at fl 2000mm

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the pec setup and activated from factory by default? I haven't played with pec settings as yet. I use adaptive optics so tracking issues are not something that will bother my system.

The mount does track superbly.

They ship with a pre-programed curve but you have to turn on PEC to use it and AP advise to redo it after 12mth once everything has settled in - assuming you even use it that is. Thats why I thought I would see if needed it and looks like I am almost at seeing without it .

Ah, must be nice. I can only dream of having enough back focus to add an AO unit. Which AO unit are you using again?

Easily turned on an off in ascom driver, or via Keypad

Sbig AOL on the remote PME, and an AO8 on the Mach 1 at home. I have looked at the starlight and I like the look of it compared to the extreme amount of back focus used in the sbig aol unit.

Somebody has to build an large format AO unit that has a built in oag and rotator... that works in either in ccdsoft or maxim. It's a huge hole in the ao market.

I'd like a combination focuser, rotator, OAG and AO all-in-one unit that consumes four (4) inches or less of back focus. Preferably only needs one power and one USB cable and has power and USB pass-through outlets for the camera, plus has ASCOM driver(s) that exposes focuser, rotator, AO and guider camera. (Does ASCOM even do AO?) X2 plugin for TheSkyX is a bonus. Handles heavy cameras with big chips without vignetting. Costs US$5K or less.

Hi Mark,

Can you clarify? You said the pre-programed PEC was a total of 5 peak to peak. You then ran 7 cycles to do a new curve and came back with a peak to peak of 3.9.

Did you turn off pre-programmed PEC when you ran PemPro to arrive at 3.9? If so, then this indicates that the pre-programmed PEC is worse than no PEC.

Or is 3.9 your residual PEC after training?

The reason I ask is that I've wondered about pre-programmed PEC for mounts manufactured in northern hemisphere, given that the worm in a conventional RA drive must run in the opposite direction for southern hemisphere use.

Thats right the factory curve was 5 peak to peak as I would expect
as mount is garanteed <7 without PEC enabled. After 10 mths it
was reduced to 3.9 simply because its had a chance to wear in and
smooth out a little.

Of course you have to and after programing it was about 0.97 peak to peak 3.9 was raw PE before training.
