had another go at improving my widefield imaging and processing early this morning only 37 x 20sec frames @ 3200 iso f4 on a 28mm no darks. I rotated it as I like the milkyway this way up no reason just a personal choice.

To be fair... you did post it on a Saturday night, and everyone's probably only just waking up

Nice job on the wide field. The central dark dust lane and the dark horse (one of my favourites) pop out with lots of contrast. However, it looks like the focus may be a little off?

Yep the focus is a problem for me I have no Liveview and have not found the infinity point on the lens yet.
Thanks for the advise and now I am going to learn about the dark horse as I am not sure which that one is I didn't even know I had it in there.

Unfortunately, there's no single infinity point on a camera lens. It tends to vary with temperature, and most lenses will in fact focus "past" infinity.

Modern SLR lenses aren't designed for very precise manual focusing, so it can be tricky. On wide aperture telephoto lenses, you can often just use autofocus on a bright star like the Pointers to the Southern Cross. Wide angle is tricky - my Canon 20D can't even autofocus on Alpha Centauri with a 24 mm f/1.4 lens.

If you have a laptop handy, you can use software such as Backyard EOS (only for Canon EOS cameras) to help with focusing - even without LiveView.

I wish there was a Backyard EOS for Nikon I have been crying over that for a while now. You can never really be sure of the focus untill you start transfering over to the PC for processing

I'm still wondering where the horse is. I do love my milky way shots.Still trying to find the perfect one.

That's nice, I wish I could get more milky way shots but it's not easy.

I'm not sure who would sell them or you could always make one up but you can now get Bahtinov Masks for camera lenses which would help with focusing.
