NGC6334 - The Cat's Paw as seen in Brisbane

Hello everyone!!

Well I am continually amazed at what I can image from my backyard only 12kms from the centre of Australia's third largest city!

My latest offering is NGC6334, the Cat's Paw Nebula in Scorpius. This image is 3x3 minute & 29x5 minute subs taken using a QHY8L through my 8" newt on a HEQ5 Pro mount, with a Baader MPCC and UHC-S filter. Guiding, as usual, was by PHD using a QHY5 and an Orion ST80. Associated darks, flats, etc were used whilst stacking in DSS. Processing was in StarTools and final cosmetics and presentation using GIMP.

What can I say - I'm chuffed!!

Very nice Mario - a sterling effort from light polluted skies. The nights have been quite hazy recently.

I've about 7hrs of data on this object over the last couple of outings to Leyburn, but am probably going to redo my RGB captures - couple of misalignment issues.

Thanks Colin. At first I thought it might be a bit red but after reading that there is a lot of inter-stellar dust in the way which knocks out nearly all the blue and green information I was happy to leave it "au naturale!"

Thanks David for the compliment. One day I hope to get up to Leyburn and have a go imaging from under dark skies... one day...

Thanks Jeanette! There are some nifty little modules in StarTools and some others in the G'MIC plugin for Gimp which can really tease out the detail. It's like watching a fog lift when things sharpen up sometimes!!

Ross, thanks for your thoughts. When you see the standard of the work produced on this forum I just sit back in awe, however I am happy with my setup and what I'm able to achieve lately from my backyard. So yes I am proud!!

Thanks Kevin - the Baader UHC-S filter works a treat in reducing the LP down to a manageable level. I'd be lost without it!

Mate you've really encouraged me to keep at it. In the last few years there have been half a dozen new street lights placed within 100 metres of my house. This greatly discouraged my attempts at deep sky. But after seeing your pics, it seems that where there is a will (and a filter or two) there is a way.

Thanks for showing what is possible in difficult conditions.

If your pockets are deep enough there is nothing that can't solve light pollution! Definitely keep at it - the other way around LP is to do narrow band imaging...
