For this location- not very long Justin. This is a dead tree that I have been driving past for nearly seven years now. It is not very far from my house at all. In fact if you could view this image full size you would be able to see my house in this shot just above the fog band on the horizon. So when I woke up well before my alarm this yesterday morning, with nothing better to do, I jumped in the car and within 10 minutes had this shot.
Whenever I am driving I am constantly on the lookout for good locations these days. Thinking about which direction I would need to be looking at which time of year to get which area of sky in relation to the foreground and if there would be any distracting elements (city glow in the background, power poles, road signs, etc.). The good potential locations all just gets stored away in the back of my head and then when time, weather and petrol permit I go and see what I can do with them.

it is so wide on a full frame camera. I actually even cropped a bit out of the right and bottom of this image to remove some of the road I was standing on. Not much thought went into the composition of this shot. Just seeing what it can do.
