Sure is a beautiful book Glenn. I got it at a pre release price from Amazon and cost me less than $40 (and that included postage). I notice that this book is selling it Australia for anywhere between $80 to $98. The Amazon price is only $30 plus postage. I still fail to see how "online" book stores in Australia have to charge so much. Probably because they can

Thanks Glen, this looks a fabulous book.
Yikes, Book Depository (in the UK) is asking around $68 and fishpond $59.
Angus & Robertson here in Aussie want $99.

I'm wandering if the prices of the Book Depository have gone up as I used to buy plenty of books over there that sell here for around $100 and pay no more than $50 over in the UK.
I have to have this book at some stage so will have to $$$save.

Hi Suzy, Amazon US have it for USD30.71 and it will cost about USD12.00 for postage, so $50.00 seems too high.

Cheers

Prices for books in Oz, when compared to the US, are always high. They sell a lot more of them to a much larger market, so they can afford to drop the prices. However, there seems to be a thing with Oz where we should be selling a book for, say, $40 and the booksellers out here put a premium on the book and make you pay $60 or more. That's over and above any markup and such. Unless I see a bargain, I hardly ever buy a book in a store anymore. I usually go online and get it there.

Book Depository US has it for AUD$36.83
Book Depository UK has it for AUD$67.64

Both with free worldwide shipping.

I know which site I'm going to choose on this occasion...

Thanks Adam!
Looks like the mystery is solved.
I've just googled the Book Depository U.S.A. and there it was at Ron's price. I had no idea they were in the U.S.A as well. Ron thought he was ordering from the U.K as we normally do, so it looks like the mistake turned into our favour. And boy that's a big difference in price between the two!

A great site for second hand books is ABE Books. www.abebooks.com

This site is a co-operative of all second hand book stores from across the globe.

I get a lot of astro books from that site. Last year I bought the three volume set of Burnham's in "hard cover" for $3.00 each, plus freight which was about $20.00. The description said that they were is excellent condition, but I wasn't expecting much, as my three soft covers had literally fallen to pieces.

When they arrived they were like new! Even hand plastic covers as well. But not all books arrive in this condition though, had one rare one that was a little worn, but that's to be expected.

All books ordered were received and in good time. It is a great site for those hard to find items. Often cheap too, but not for the really hard to find or antiquarian collectables.

Thanks Peter for explaining all of that- I always wondered what Abebooks was all about as quite often if the Book Dep. was out of stock they would say to try there. What is the service and shipping time like?

It seems the mystery book price isn't fully solved after all.

Ron's just checked his order- on his account it's come up as Book Depository.co.uk - NOT the U.S. site.

We were logged on to the U.K. site at the same time re-checking the prices, yet he's gotten the same, cheap price as the U.S. site, while I was getting the more expensive price.
Go figure.

Hi Suzy,

The service is great. The website is sent up in Canada, I think, and you can search and pay the one place and then the item is shipped from whatever second hand book store has the item. It could be anywhere in the world.

The books have a full description of condition, location, publish dates and if anything is missing, i.e. disc, if it accompanies a book, and whether it is ex library etc.

I have ordered quite a few books from them, in the hundreds of dollars (not all at once), and they all have arrived in a timely manner, but I can't give you an exact idea, as I don't take much notice of delivery times. I can say this though, a couple of deliveries have taken me by surprise, having arrived in days instead of the week or two that I expected.

The site has an easy search engine. But, try using different search terms when doing general search, i.e. astronomy and observing will bring up different results. Use more specific terms in advanced search if required.

Have received everything I have ordered. Often the cost of postage has exceeded the cost of the book, but only because the cost of the books are sometimes ridiculously low. I ordered a book last week for $1.00, cost me about $5.00 for postage.

Overall, I have had a great experience on this site.

One other thing Suzy. For those hard to find items you need to check regularly. I search at least once a month.
