Just FYI, Stephen O'Meara has recently (Aug'11) released a new volume in his Deep Sky Companions series called The Secret Deep:

Had this book a couple of months. Its is back to the size of his first book on the Messier Objects. Similar format but he is more focused on the history and physics of the objects, less on the "fluffier" stuff that characterised his last book (Hidden Treasures)

Its a good buy.

Hey Malcolm,
would you mind explaining (as I know you've got it) how does it compare to "Deep Sky Companions- The Messier Objects" (one of my fav. books)?

My next book purchase was going to be The Southern Skies volume of Night Sky Observer's Guide for when Carina season comes around again, so the O'Meara book will have to jump in the Que.

X'mas wishlist has already been spent

with Stellarview finder and bits for it.

Oh, and I "extra" have to get NSOOG because of Steven (Sjastro) who contributed to it I just found out. I refer to post 29 & 39 of this thread.

I am a fan of this series too.

This is a great book. Got it ages ago, as I had ordered it from Amazon back around June, maybe earlier, when it was originally slated for release. It is a good companion to the other books in the series, Hidden Treasures, Caldwell Objects, Messier Objects.

Although I only paid about $28.00 AUD (including postage), as I ordered it at the pre-release price. By the time it was finally released the dollar was at it's highest. It is nice to see that the Australian price actually reflects the US price. Amazon now has it for $38 and by the time you add freight, it would be more expensive than the Australian price of $43. Rare to see a cheaper Australian price

Sorry I haven't replied earlier Suzy!
All of O'Mearas guides have a similar format. What I found was from the MEssier book to the Caldwell book and then the Hidden Treasures book, they become progressively thicker and he was writing a lot more on each object. Especially in Hidden Treasures some of what he wrote was "fluff" IMHO. In this books he has gone back to the style of the Messier book, less fluff more substance.

By the way, I bought a copy of his Observing the Night Sky with Binoculars from The Book Depository for $12.45 including postage. A local national bookselling chain here has it for a mere $69.00!!

It's a good one - had it on pre-order all year and devoured it the instant it turned up. Excellent addition to the series - slightly more northern hemisphere bias this time around, but still wonderful ... made me want to upgrade my 101 to a NP127 though (and move to a volcano).
