Finally found what I want to wear star gazing
Shame winter is over and the nights don't need it, but when I was looking for something to wear over winter someone suggested a coldroom outfit like the shelf packers wear in the frozen goods section of the super market.
I think this is far better. I'll be getting one for the next cold night. Figured others here might not know about them.

Yeah, but when you need to go number 2's, you tend to get very very cold taking it all off.

LOL @ Geoff
And while I don't own one of your wonderfully warm suits, I know of plenty who do.
One day I'll come knocking on your door.

Novel idea Sam,
But I see it says

For about the same price, the Freezer suit is a much wiser investment, as Geoff has said.
AND, as you are only just down the road in Sydney, you can try some a few on to find the right fit! (in Terrigal)
I swear by mine.
They make a cold nights viewing a cosy warm affair.
And from experience, astro-viewing is generally better on those really cold crisp nights.

OMG, I hate to think what it would be like if one had a touch of flatulence in one of those . Would also pose a bit of a problem when one wanted to visit the Loo. Looks like it sure would keep one warm though.

Sam,
IMHO, any warm clothing like this is definitely the way to go. I can't comment on the walking sleeping bags you mention, but my freezer suit is the only reason that I have spent many more hours under dark skies than I would have if I didn't use one. They are well worth the money, and from memory they cost about the same.
Anyone who has visited Queensland Astrofest and/or Leyburn where we see temperatures down to -5 deg between June and August would have seen many of us in our "Michelin Man' suits over the years still out and observing long after others who weren't as warm, retire for the night.

I use a 2nd hand snow suit/ski suit. Works perfectly for late cold nights and was $30. Best money I ever spent.
The Red Cross store in Goulburn NSW often has a huge range of them for under $30.

I was happy outside without any extra clothing this winter.
The suit does have something so you can walk on it, and the hands come off.
Mostly I like the look. Anyhoo, i'm moving to Perth so sadly I doubt i'll have a need for extra warmth over there.
Right now its the mosquitos that are killing me.
Once its winter again i'll probably find a great anti-mossie suit.
