Very high-res H-alpha sun

This is probably the highest resolution full solar disk I have managed to capture to date.

The original data is some 4500 x 4500 pixels, which can't easily be displayed on the web...hence the link below is to a decidedly smaller version.

Some 30 fields used to form the full mosaic, with over 12,500 avi frames processed for the end result.

I was particularly pleased with the limb-disk layering which ended up looking seamless, helped by the superb seeing on the day which kept the image data very stable.

Great pic. That long line of proms and spots across the disc looks terrific. The proms on the edge also show a lot of details. More than your previous shots.

Thanks Marc. The spicules on the solar edge are hard suckers to capture...its nice to have a win every so often !

Super result Peter, very easy to get lost in it, just such so much to look at. Would make a terrific poster to display in a museum.

Like the spicules. These are often seen during good seeing and you have captured them well. I reckon that filagree look you are after is happening now Peter. I like the detail on the solar surface. Very nice work. Have you considered orientating the image correctly ie so that the image is north south?

Re: the image orientation....it simply caught my eye more in the east/west
placement that the camera had at the time of capture.

Every now and then, an image comes along that just blows me away; this is one of them. I can only imagine the work it took to make this stunning mosaic from 30 fields/12,500 frames. The detail, texture and tones are so consistent across the image, a testament to superb processing skills.

Blimey, swirling detail is amazing. Don't know what spicules are but this looks like very hard work. Thanks for undertaking this effort.

Dennis has touched on the enormity of the task above, as it took the best part of a day on a pretty fast Core i7 series PC just to process the .avi files, with the mosaic taking even longer. Windows was complaining it was low on virtual memory a few times despite having over 500 gig to play with!

If you look closely at the image you will see some of the proms (filaments actually ) look like clouds and have "soft" edges... which was a surprise (to me at least)...but in retrospect, should not have been unexpected as they are gas clouds of sorts.

I was thinking the same thing. Superb and when one is still near the bottom of the ladder and sees an image like this, it makes that ladder look very tall and an exciting one to climb.

Thanks. I like it. The cat likes it (known at my house as "Mr C" ... he was with me when I took it...we had to break the imaging session for a can of Snappy Tom.....he has the humans well trained)
