My First ...!!!

Galaxy !!
Currently my northern aspect is a bit bare of targets and I've been concentrating on the SMC/47 Tuc region thanks to Paddys Charts. Then we've had about 10 days of wet, wind and of course, cloud.

But unexpectedly it cleared last night and was clear and cold, quite good seeing so I got the big scope out and fired up Stellarium to look for 'thingies in space'. Looking for a change I spotted a few Nebs, M2, M15 but they were all getting low in the west, my tree covered view. Then a wee yellow circle popped up, NGC 253, Sculptor Galaxy. High in the NE 37, 72 at about 9:30. Did a Nth/Sth base level and alignment using Jupiter at 8:47, due Nth exactly and when it got a bit darker started hunting. I discovered that if you read your dec settings right it is much easier, search out by 10 degrees doesn't work !!

About 9:45 after much running back and fowards to my PC ( must sort the lappie out !!) I swept across it. A dull smear of grey squeezed up by a wee triangle of stars.
Technical details:
10" f5 with 20mm GSO wide view, 25mm and 12 mm Plossls.
Seeing about 4, quite stable after the recent colder weather, Transparency about 3 or slightly better.
Core became apparent as I viewed, disk tilted at about 15 degrees off vertical in a clockwise dirn. HIP 3706 at lower left with its other stars forming a triangle. Upper part of the disk was softly visible out to almost HIP 3745 but the lower lobe was very faint by comparison. I was easily seeing down to mag 11.7 and could pick up two other occluded stars (?) through the disk on either side of the core.
The 12mm gave a closer but much dimmer view and the 25 mm plossl was very clear.
Being only 20 degrees off the elliptic it tracked very fast, one of the reasons it was hard to find (catch !!). It was at about 352 west by the time I'd done, I'd found it at 2 degrees east after getting lost.

I viewed for about 45 mins, did a diagram/sketch and finished the evening about 10:30 quite pleased with myself. PDF of sketch attached,

Not sure how others do it and might be useful for newbies ( like myself ) to know but the base levelling and star alignment for Nth/Sth helps immensely with getting the setting circles working. I've been trying to get it right with a compass and a GPS but a timed star alignment works excellently. I'm also going to add a simple inclinometer to the side of the UTA for quick easy reference. Learning all the time eh ?

And another comment. Getting real used to finding things better with the bins and scope. I took the rubbish down to the street late last night ( long driveway ) and took the bins with me. On the way back swung them up at SMC and found 47 Tuc without even trying.

And a question. I scanned the bins down over LMC region as well and spotted quite a large globular cluster. Very similar in size to 47 Tuc but dimmer, not so well defined. But when I checked Stellarium in that region I could not fnd any cluster that approached what I saw. I realise that Stellarium is not totally accurate in what you see but this was quite distinct in it's dense globular form. Any one got any clues, comments ?

Congratulations on your first galaxy Brent. And a great description and sketch.

I suspect that the object that you saw with binos around LMC was NGC 2070, the 'Tarantula neblua'. One of the best observing targets in the sky I reckon. Get you 10" scope on it and you will be able to trace dark lanes for hours. It is the largest star forming region known in the local group and is lit by stars of incomprehensible dimensions.

I can't offer any advice re levelling or setting circles as I only star hop. I found the whole setting circle thing too complex. Over time you will find that your experience of just pointing accurately at a patch of sky you know will become very common.

Looking forward to more reports and sketches.

BTW I hope to have some LMC charts up soon.

NGC6752 is similar in shape to Tuc47 and it's in Pavo - right next door to Tucana. But Tarantula sounds about right for where you were pointing - LMC has a lot of good stuff for viewing and is coming into it's own for the summer.
My fave is Carina though!
The bright lobe in Sculptor is an effect caused by two huge star forming areas on one side.

Tarantula you both reckon. Maybe but does not look anything like that in Stellarium. Looks like I've got a new search on if the skies are clear tonight. See if I can identify it for sure. NGC 6752 is definitely too far away for what I saw. bUt I'll go look for it later.

Carina ? Eta Carina ? Stellarium does not recognise that name. Any other nom de plume ?

Stellarium says eta carina is a -2.5mag star @
10 13 44 RA
- 70* 5' 32"Dec
but there's no nebula there to marvel at!

Jen, Eta Carina is the Star,NGC 3372 is the nebula.
Most people Associate the Nebula and the star as one IE The Eta Carinea Nebula
I hope that helps
Cheers

Hi Brent,

I enjoyed your report and sketches on NGC253 (and crikey- you scribble like a doctor ). Thank you for sharing your report with us. I saw this using Ron's 16", but the weather since has not permitted me my first view of it through my 10". I'm am so eager to catch this on again. But Andromeda, oh my goodness, how good is that one!

The catalogue name of the Eta Carina Nebula is NGC3372. Type that in and see how you go. Within the nebula, using your 10" scope, you will easily make out the bright star, Eta Carina. Using a 10mm ep (5mm better still), you will easily make out the the homunculus surrounding the star Eta Carina.
I'm yet to aim my 10" at the Tarrantula (only ever tried it in my 6" and it was also very low at that stage), but I saw it through Ron's 16" recently and it was scary! I will never forget it!

Hi All, cloud tonight so it's all off, dang it. LMC and Tarantula is an excellent target at present. High southern sky about 22:30 and clears most of the LP. I've got a 6mm so should be able to see detail ok.

>Suzy : Scribble ..!!?? Quite legible IMHO, it's facts that matter, not handwriting !! I'm just pleased I've found a method of recording that suits me. I combined a number of other sketch pad designs with ideas of my own. Blue rings for the FOV and an EP list, I never use one EP on a target. And its A4, not a half page which I find hard to use.

Hurry up with those LMC charts Paddy. I am looking forward to seeing what I can find.

Sculptor was definitely a 'Wow!' moment . If the weather clears for the weekend I'm going to climb a volcano and look for Andromeda.

I have no problem with that- I know what eta looks like in the Greek alphabet...
Eta Carina is masked slightly by the homonculus nebula - I've been trying to get a good look at that for a full year. It's over the roof of my house and I'd need to wait til 4am - to get a cold roof (concrete tile!).
I call the whole shebang with the right angled dust lane in it the Carina Nebula - wasn't sure of the NGC number - so thanks for the number - they seem so personal somehow....

It seems Stellarium forgot to put the nebula in there!

Well it's a mighty shame that you chose to take a light hearted comment out of the good natured context it was meant to relay and instead into an attack on you. The laughing emoticon was meant to let you know I was having a friendly "poke" at your writing. At no stage did I make a comment on your reporting technique.
I did a fairly lengthy positive post, and gave you some helpful tips, but you chose to ignore all that and focus your attention negatively. Guess I should have spent my time watching white noise on my tv, it would have been more rewarding.
If I thought for a moment I was out of line, I wouldn't be shy in apologising. I don't think I was, and I think you reacted rather harshly.
I take observing seriously, don't for a minute think I don't. I'd tell you to lighten up but that would only get me into more trouble , especially if I put a laughing emoticon next to it like this .

Hey Suzy, no offense intended at all, I was jest pokin' it back at you. Sorry if it 'looked' that way, it certainly was NOT intended to be anything more than lighthearted. I'm normally the one poking the borax at everyone at work and certainly did not take your comment as even vaguely offensive or an attack on myself. No way !! I do appreciate your comments and encouragement about my efforts as a newbie as I discover new delights with my scope. This site and the members have all been a huge help to me and I seek their assistance and guidance to help my efforts.

I apologise totally if that is how it sounded. That can be the problem with forums or emails, you don't get to hear the tone of voice or see the face. I guess sometimes the quick cryptic reply can not always convey the real intent. I know what my writing is like and happily wear the jibes and remarks. I am the only one who reads them and I am always in a hurry to get my thoughts down before the moment passes and Alzheimers takes over.

And I was happy to work out a system that works for me. I don't do recording of information well and this all seemed to work along with this new found enthusiasm for this fascinating hobby.

Please come back from the white noise and keep poking at me. Don't ever take anything I say as trying to put anybody down anywhere. I've been through too much in the past with that stuff and know what it can do. Anything I say is always with a smile on my face, take my word for it.

Awwww that was a mighty nice apology Brent, thank you.
I enjoy being poked myself (many who know me know this), just some emoticons within that post would have gone a long way. But I think you already know that now.
So, I have permission to poke you more
I'm back from the white noise.

Ta again Suzy, feel free to poke anytime. I'll try to remember where the emoticons are in future and think a bit more about how a statement might 'sound' to someone. Sometimes I type faster than I think.

Phew !!

Now, back to the normal programme
