Astronomy

Went to the book shop here in Roma and picked up a book called "Astronomy :a self teaching guide" by Dinah L Moche $28.
A little more than basic stuff with quizzes at the end of each chapter.

What a coincidence, I just bought this book today! Looks really interesting and love the idea of the quizzes at the end. I also picked up three books by Lawrence Krauss, I'm excited!

Hi Shelley;
Which are the titles of the Krauss books ?
Your excitement has gotten me interested in Krauss.

If you've got any coins left, I'd highly recommend Brian Greene's "Fabric of the Cosmos".

Cheers

Hi Craig,

I got The Fifth Essence: The Search for Dark Matter in the Universe, Atom: An Odyssey from the Big Bang to Life on Earth...and Beyond (which I'm fairly certain is his newest book) and The Physics of Star Trek (thought it could be interesting and humorous). I watched one lecture yesterday with Krauss http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Imvl...eature=related which was posted on here yesterday followed by a conversational show between himself and Richard Dawkins about evolution etc and I'm sold, instant fan girl

He's in Australia at the moment promoting Science Week but he's not visiting Brisbane

I'll definitely add Greene's book to my list, I'm pretty sure I saw it there. I found this amazing secondhand book store in Brisbane city so I think I'll be heading back there very soon

I started to watch it .. am running short on my bandwidth allowance though - only got a bit into it, but it looked interesting. Dawkins - Evolution's Rottweiler !! (He's a good stirrer ... we need those types).

Rats !! Looks like I missed him, too. Would've liked to have gone to hear him.

Cheers

I agree, Dawkin's really cracks me up with some of the things he says, both of them are just so intelligent and witty, I love it! I hope you get to watch the whole thing soon, I watched it all the way through then couldn't get enough and had to find more!

I'm hoping maybe he'll come back next year for Science Week so I can book a trip in advance if he decides to miss Brisbane again! Otherwise, if I ever visit America I'm going to Arizona

Anyway, apologies Adrian for hijacking your thread!

Yep, me too Adrian ...
With all due respect to Dawkins, after watching some of his DVDs & youtubes, etc .. I really do think that he's as fanatical (read 'religious') about Evolutionary Science as those he's pursuing/challenging.

Having made that statement, I do understand why he takes that stance. I'm not so sure he does though.

Cheers

He does seem a tad fanatical, doesn't he? I guess it's hard not to when you believe in something so much. But then that statement can be quite hyprocritcal when you begin to involve religion or anything for that matter. Krauss was saying perhaps if he approached people and explained that believing in evolution didn't mean that there was no room for their religion that he would get more response but Dawkins was pretty adamant that he could change people's views with enough evidence to support evolution but not religion.

But as you said, I still agree and understand his stance but he's beating a dead horse assuming that facts and theories will change people's minds. Especially when their faith comes from something with not much physical evidence at all.

Anyway, you should check out that evolution chat sometime and I'll stop ranting or I'll never stop
