Definitely Judas Priest.

I stopped listening to Metallica when they brought out that rubbish album 'And Justice for All'.

Cheers,
Jason.

I actually liked that one (AJFA...) but the rest afterwards are trash. Massively over-rated band IMO

Jason,

How could you blaspheme? ...And Justice For All was their defining moment, in my opinion. I can listen to that album over, and over, and over again. And, indeed, in my youth, I did just that. How could you possibly beat Blackened as an album opener? I would say that they went down the toilet with the next release. RIP Metallica, 1987.

Tony, your poll is like comparing apples and oranges. Judas Priest were around a decade prior to Metallica. A fairer comparison would be Judas Priest and Black Sabbath.

Halford's singing in Diamonds and Rust, the live version does it for me.

Thanks,
Tony

Maybe your friend should man up and listen to some Judas Priest and/or Black Sabbath.

yep... however, they think that Metallica is a better heavy metal band  I personally think that Judas Priest is part of the back bone of heavy metal... the others being iron maiden, led zepplin, black sabbath and such

Well it's a no brainer. Judas priest. Nothing beats a free wheel burning and the best ever live sound on stage IMO. Metallica? Sure. Kill'em all ok, Ride the Lightning excellent, Master of Puppets cool, Justice for what?... Then It's all a blur of slow BS riffs from there on with the 'occasional wake up call'. Came to my senses and hoped the Mustaine way. That's what a good riff sounds like.

... and let's not forget Motorhead which IMHO is the root and the main drive behind a lot of speed/trash metal bands and other genres around today. Go Lemmy! . Those guys along Wendy o'William nearly sent worlwide TV manufacturers to a halt.

One of my favourite bands of all time the Plasmatics, there's always one of their CD's in the stacker in the car (usually Coup d'etat). It's over 10 years now since poor old Wendy went down the back paddock and ended it. Lemmy (along with Gene Simmons) actually did a lot for Wendy and her career.

There's a lot more of their stuff coming up on youtube these days, worth a look.

As I mentioned in another thread, I met Lemmy in a pub (The Lewisham) about 15 years ago. Philthy Animal Taylor was there too, but I didn't get to talk to him as he was passed out on the floor. Seriously!

Cheers,
Jason.

I got to play with Motorhead in the 80's once. Hanged with Lemme, he said he stared in the industry as a roady for Hendrix in the UK.

ps... I was up in the upper circle at a staggering £1.50

This is getting like poker!!
I used to work in the Edinburgh Playhouse in the late 80's
Met Lemmy and the boys after their gig (Bomber Tour 1984) - probably the last for Filthy Phil and Fast Eddie who both looked decidedly Clean and Slow respectively!
Lemmy on the other hand lived up to his legend status (PM me for details!!)
I introduced a friend to Mr L and didn't see him for days after!!!
Ain't music fun!?

Hehe, its funny how the definition of heavy metal has changed over the years. The likes of Judas Priest, Metallica, Led Zep, Black Sabath and Motorhead would be considered mainstream wooze rock these days.

I had the unfortunate experience of a Maryln Manson gig, right in the mosh pit, a very physical ear bleed night WAY above threshhold of pain that made me deaf for days, Im talking body thumping power that literally moves you.

I also went to a Mudvayne gig that was an amazing, frantic slam fest.

And also the likes of System of a down, Avenged Sevenfold and even Muse (my all time favorite alt heavy rock) add dimensions to metal that make the old farts mentioned here very ordinary indeed, you need to get with it guys, nostagia wears thin, times have changed, it gets allways gets better .

Mars Volta for instance does Led Zep style heavier, faster, louder, tighter, trickyer, better than Led Zep could ever hope to perform, not to say Led Zep is inferier, they were the 1st, and I love them for that, but metal has progressed WAY passed those feeble beginnings.

Talking Judas Priest the wheelchair rockers

Well you people who have voted for Judas Priest has just declared yourself dinosars. I know this is a generalisation and a wild statement but truely these guys are no doubt pioneners but their music sux. Funny no one knew the lead singer was gay? Anyway Metallica won my vote because they can write all sorts of music styles, the black album, do I need to say more?
So if you like watching english men strapped in leather moving to music that will give your mother an AMI (acute myocardial infarction) go for it.
As for myself I like to listen to good music like sipping a smooth red wine enjoying the quality. I am sorry to say judas priest would be drinking a red that has turned to vinegar.
Best regards Paul "rockon"
