So a DOB 8" it will be hey. Thanks for all that very useful advice. I will do some shopping around then. Can you let me know what specs (focal length/aperture) is best for an under $500 one? Do I need to clean the lenses frequently?
Jono
the 8" GSO is 200mm x 1200mm making it F6. if you take care you will rarely have to clean the mirrors. I have had mine for about 1.8 years and it still hasnt been properly cleaned. I did blow off some hairs once... mirror cleaning isnt hard but needs to be done properly. if you searchthe forum there are threads on cleaning mirrors
Before I go buy, I will take your advice in joining a star group first. What's with all the star groups these days, the information on their website seems so outdated. Can anyone recommend a good group closest to Sydney CBD holding an amateur/beginner session in the coming weeks/month?
Jono
As much as it nearly strangles me to recommend another society if you are based near the CBD then the North Sydney Astronomy Society may be the go.
I live in Roseville (just a train ride away) and have an 8 inch GSO Dob...and a few other toys...if you struggle with finding a club to hook up with feel free to send me a PM and I can let you see what the animal looks like before you buy...
See Robs & my previous posts in this thread, for links to all your local Sydney Astronomical Societies. L.
ps. They will be more than happy to assist in your quest..... Whatever it is.
