What was that huge bright I saw today?

Hi. About 5.30pm today I noticed there was a huge bright star hanging low in the western sky. Is this Jupiter?

That would be Venus.
Jupiter is in the north east a little before sunrise.

Definately Venus this time of year... Worthwhile pointing a scope at it and checking out the current phase (very simmilar to the phases of the moon).... You wont get any surface detail due to venus's thick, cloudy atmosphere, but an interesting sight nonetheless...
