BARCELONA (Reuters) - A company behind plans to open the first hotel in space says it is on target to accept its first paying guests in 2012 despite critics questioning the investment and time frame for the multi-billion dollar project.
The Barcelona-based architects of The Galactic Suite Space Resort say it will cost 3 million euro ($4.4 million) for a three-night stay at the hotel, with this price including an eight-week training course on a tropical island.
They make it sound so simple ... almost sounds like science fiction. Get on the "bus" and off we go. We live in an amazing century. The time scale of 15 years sounds a bit short to me though. I don't think many kids will have enough pocket money to go up there for a while yet
Great idea but it's going to take some doing in a 3 year time frame. Not only that, where are they going to orbit this hotel?? It'll have to be higher than the ISS, or far enough away to be safe if it's in the same orbit.
I think the article has a few errors. The company behind the move is Drax Corporation. Founded by the self made Billionaire Hugo Drax. His #2, Mr J. hasn't been seen for some time.
I've posted photos of the two, you can even see some of the hotel in the background.
... and that would be the modern version of lurch, the space hotel doorbell man :"you rang!?..."
Except in his case, he'd fall out of the airlock, and go into orbit for a short while before reentering the atmosphere. He'd land in a chook pen, wrecking it and then get up, adjust his tie and walk off. Anyone else following him down would either burn up on reentry or die when they crashed into the chook pen

No way mate. Chuck Norris would survive such an impact and would still have enough energy to roundhouse him in the head.
They say the guests will wear velcro suits.
But isn't it unsafe to use velcro in space. Something to do with the static electricity they generate when pulled apart and levels of oxygen in the habitat.
Just had a thought...what if the Hilton Corp' decided, seeing this project might make it to orbit, that they will build a proper hotel in orbit. Say, 200 rooms, gyms and pools (just had a great idea for a pool in space!!!) and such.
Only one big problem with all that....Paris. Undoubtedly, she would come up with some kinky ideas for partying on the premises!!
The Russians have already published a book on that subject. No photos, just line drawings. Amazing what you can do in zero gravity. Absolutely amazing.
I think Sirius Optics had it for sale at Astrofest last year. I was nearly going to buy it but was too embarrassed to take it to the checkout.
... which reminds me. Wasn't the world coming to a sticky end in 2012 These jokers are planning to abscond with the money to their own space hotel. I'm definitely not going now - I'll stay here and fall into the abyss with my four million bucks - that'll really jack them off
