Hi all just an add on to my question on joining two computers instead of joining two computers would i be able to have one hard drive and two key boards two monitors and two mouses all joined to the hard drive the reason i''m asking this is because i have an office on the ground floor of a two story house and i want to build an observatory in the roof space of the second floor and be able to bring up the same info at both locations can anyone suggest the best way of doing this

... dont think so, networking either by cable or wireless is the go, assuming windows OS you can "share" files between computers, this will also give you internet on both. Go to "help" via "start" and put in "home networking"

this was said in your last post, you can control one pc from the other, though you still need 2 computers. the best is to run it over a gigabyte network, 1000mb/s this will almost allow you to control the computer in real time. Though you need to be reasonably computer savvy.

It might be in your interest to do a tafe coarse on basic computing.

Or get your local "guru" to help you out setting it up.

There used to be a device to do just this but it was designed to work in the same office rather than over any distance. At the time though it was just as cheap to buy a used PC. I'd suggest perhaps a wireless hub and a netbook PC?

Connecting a second monitor should be fairly straight forward. If you have a laptop, then it should already have a second monitor port, otherwise you can get a splitter from Dick Smith/Tandy/AZTronics etc. For the keyboard & mouse, most PC's won't cope with 2 different inputs so maybe a commercial wireless keyboard/mouse system such as would get used in a lecture theatre. These have a great range and should cope with multistories provided you don't have too much interference in the house. You'll need to contact a serious A?V supplier for that and they aren't cheap. I am a I.T Technician by profession.

From what I understand you want a PC going to two monitors, two keyboards and two mouses.
This is easy achievable by using a dual port video adapter (if you using a desktop) and hub for your keyboard and mouse. If your main setup isa laptop the you are in luck as most laptops come with a external VGA port. (There are few implications here such as what ports your monitor supports either DVI or VGA) However the problem you’re faced with is the location of the second set of hardware. It is too far away from main setup. So you won’t be able to get a cable long enough for this.

Here is what I would suggest.
(Assuming you have 2 computers running Windows XP and connecting to a central router/modem)

On your office computer: make it part of a "WORKGROUP" give it a specific name.
On your laboratory computer, join it to the same "WORKGROUP".
Enable file sharing on both computers.
Now you have a basic home network between the two computers and you can now share files.

Here is the fun part, If both computers are connected to a central router/modem they will both be part of your LAN (Local Area Network)

If both computers are on the LAN you can control each other’s computer.
(I.E from your office you could control the laboratory computer and vice versa).
This done through Windows RDC (Remote Desktop Connection).
You will need to enable this service. (Check the Microsoft tech support site for assistance).

Or if you have trouble getting RDC to work, use a program called TIGHT VNC.
It will do the same thing as RDC but it is allot more simple and easier to use.

PS: I would strongly suggest getting a tech to do it. There is allot of fine detail I have skipped, as not to over complicate it for you.
But the above should give you a few ideas of how to achieve what you want.
