Most Practical Mag ?

hi all

this has most likely has been asked and answered

i am thinking of getting another ep for my 12 inch dob something thatll give me more magnification then my 15mm plossl (100x)

what is the most practical highest mag i should be pushing my scope to ?
(without a barlow)
i do realise seeing conditions apply

i was thinking of at least a 6mm ?

any comments are welcome

I vote 8mm or 6mm giving you 187 - 250x.

What about a 10mm giving 150x then when added to a Barlow giving 300x. Your 15mm gives 100x now and with a Barlow 200x.

A good range of mags??

Vind, How much coin do you have? Can you BORROW BEFORE YOU BUY?
I have noticed that a lot of people in here do not like or have 'Meade' E/Pcs. I have a goodly amount of the Series 4000's & like the views I get very much. They are well suited to my set-up(10" f4.5). They should be O.K. with yours. They just cost a little more. (except for the 5mm SP, I bought for $26.oo. off eBay). Apparently someone here was going to buy one, but changed their mind,(still don't know why). I didn't. It's a nice E/Pc. Gives me 228x mag. without the #140 'Meade' barlow.
I don't know if I've posted my E/Pcs. before, so here they are,
All 4000 SP's> 32mm,15mm,UWA 14mm,12.4mm,9.7mm,6.4mm&5mm.
Strays are 25 & 18mm MA's, & 7.4mm Teleview Plossl.
As you can see they cover a wide range, but give a useable spread of mags.

no unfortunately i cant borrow before buying geraldton hasnt got any place in particular that handles that sort of thing in stock

plenty of people that have scopes and stuff but the closest place for buying astronomy gear is perth :

then i might as well shop around the eastern states and so on

iam just after a bit more manification. i am trying to save up for an 2 inch 2x powermate

How long is a piece of string??
There are many variables to how high you can go.
The general rule of thumb is 50x the aperature in inches.

This does how ever depend on the quality and optical alignment of the scopes as well as the atmospheric conditions and objects sort.
I have a 12.5" f6 low obstruction Newtonian scope of high quality and have obtained higher mags than 50x /inch but this is a rarirty and was only to see what my limits are on nights of good seeing. Usualy 3-450 for me at 12.5"
I have been able to use a friends GSO 12" on occasions and
practically 250-350x , but make sure you have it well collimated before trying high powers or you will be disapointed.
We spent conciderable time collimating his scope to use this sort of power.
