Helix and NGC 346

Hi all,

With months of terrible weather I pulled an all nighter wednesday. for some reason i thought I'd try to do new things as well like use eqmod for the first time through NINA. while i learnt a lot, i still had issues getting going, so reverted back to the hand controller and PHD1.

Anyway, here is the Helix Nebula (1.5hrs) and NGC 346 (1hr).

In addition if anyone has any ideas to get rid of these concentric circles i'm all ears - absolute nightmare to process - no doubt the refractor baffle

Ive used EQMOD for the last 4 years but use it with Stellarium as my planetarium to navigate

Only last night I experienced weird artifacts in my images and I found the problem to be my flats.

My flats illumination panel is an EL panel and the power supply being a switching supply produces a large amount of interference that cause banding in weird patterns.

It may not be your issue as I were never that concentric but try it out.

The method I used was the severely stretch each colour channel individually where I found the opposite artifacts present.

To fix it I placed a couple of filter ferrous cores and wrapped both the input and output power wires through the core of the ferrite core. My latest flats are clean and so was my image.

Sometimes this issue does not show as the placement of the power supply to the imaging setup can stop this.

thanks for the comments and the suggestions. I'll check that link thanks Martin, and thanks for the suggestion too Malcolm it is worth a go I guess - but i am pretty sure it shows up in the lights too
definitely needs more data, hopefully i will get some more if the weather is nice then reprocess, looks a bit harsher on my other screen (they were processed on my tv).

I'm pretty new to astronomy (one year) and by accident I saw NGC 346 for the first time the other night. I was messing around with the push-pull Dob wandering from 47 Tuc to C104, and saw a nebulous blur. At first I thought it was C104 - But so much fainter than usual. And nothing like a globular cluster, after about two seconds of inspection. I checked the setting circles on the Dob and checked Stellarium, and was pretty sure what I'd found, but went image searching to check. Nice! This removed all doubt, and of all the pics I've seen of this part of the sky, this is my favourite. Love how you got C104 in the frame, along with that amazing array of SMC nebulae.

I went into pictures and applied a Vanilla filter.

I think it is better, not perfect, but it only took a few seconds.

Thanks Bob - I can't remember if I solved this with slower flats or extra baffling.
