Unfortunately, one of our ASV members had their car broken into after the #stargazing ABC event last Thursday. Please contact the ASV and Victoria Police should you see the telescope and parts being offered for sale.
Please see attachment for items stolen and a photo.
Cashies sometimes send them interstate if it's a valuable item to make it harder to track down.
I'll keep an eye/ears out; I get calls regarding the sale of 2nd hand goods (which we absolutely don't touch for this very reason) but we're up in QLD. Perhaps try to alert local telescope shops and public observatories as well as they often get such calls from people attempting to sell 2nd hand goods.
The people who usually seal stuff like this have no idea of its value and even how to use it, it's just quick cash for one or many of their bad habits.
I am sorry to hear of this, hope it was at least insured.
Leon
If the stolen telescope is not found, and the ASV member is not insured, this would be a most devastating loss to him and for what he contributed on Thursday night at Star Gazing Live at Fed Square.
As the ASV member, out of his goodness, brought his own scope to benefit everyone at the ABC live event on Thursday night at Fed Square, could the ASV consider setting up a Go Fund Me page and let the ABC know, and for the public and us all to donate and contribute towards buying the replacement equipment, ie, the telescope, mount, eyepieces and filters etc, everything that was stolen from the ASV member.
I would hope and think it is the least that we and the Melbourne public can all repay his kindness for bringing his scope for the children and public on Thursday night and that we can go in some way repair/reverse his loss and damage here?

Bill I can see where you are coming from, and I feel deeply for the person that had all this stuff stolen.
However if i contributed to everyone that asked for funding i would be broke.
Sorry i know it sounds very blunt, but daily we are asked to send money, donate, for all sorts of different reasons.
I will probably be shot down in flames for my opinion, (and it would not be the first time) but that is how i see it and am game enough to put my name to something i do not agree with, where others think it but say nothing.
Maybe we would be better off to have a "stolen items thread" with posted photos, serial numbers ect, then when people here find gear selling out there in the wild they can whip the phone out and go the full Sherlock Holmes
Leon, I think you misunderstand the go fund me thing. It's just a way for anyone who feels like contributing to give an amount of money. You shouldn't feel compelled. In this instance I think the go fund me page would be appropriate.
You're not the only one to suffer from fund raising fatigue; I automatically reject all phone solicitations these days. We choose to give a few hundred a year in other ways.

It is unfortunate to have to do this, but this is actually a GOOD IDEA!

, Is it a Meade LS 6 or 8 ? , cant quite make it out , but I will keep a look out over here for you .
On a better note I had an eyepiece case with a full set of 1 1/4 inch Japaneese Ortho's stolen when in Darwin and because I had my name on the case they were found 100 metres from my place in a ditch and handed into the police , as said most people dont know what these things are and cant use them .
Good luck in finding the scope and scum that took it
Edit : , just spotted the small list of items in the photos .
Brian.

Reason: found info
I guess the takeaway is that we should be prepared and cautious--take lots of photos of your gear, get them engraved, put stickers etc. to personalise them. Get them insured etc.
I manage the equipment for one of the clubs. Three (3!!!) dobs went missing before I took over. I managed to recover one of them. We don't know if they were stolen or just forgotten in someone's cupboard. So we engraved every single thing with a serial number (if they didn't have one) and labelled all of them. Things often get misplaced because they can get mixed up in people's personal gear so this also helps.
I know all Meade LX90s have an inspection certificate sticker which have numbers, the person who inspected it, and when it was done. They're unique to each batch done on a certain date. It might help identify the scope. Also an idea of when and where the scope was bought/manufactured can help identify it as Meade does make revisions of the LX90s throughout the years.
The police at Narre Warren have a telescope in their possession, please contact Detective Senior Constable Andrew Pybus at the Narre Warren police station on 9705 3111. This was posted on Facebook.
Hope it is the one taken last Thursday.
Cheers Keith
