N70 Super Bubble Nebula in NB colour 76hrs

Hi Guys

This image has been very difficult to produce and ended up with too many artifacts in a vain attempt to make a pretty pic. There are good reasons why other examples are rare and ordinary, its dim. The 40min subs are mostly buried in noise hence the need for 72hrs. Im not sure now if its worth the bother, this sort of caper. Target choice needs more research in the future . Click here for big.

N70 in Ha,SII,HA,OIII mapped as LRGB. Ha 63 42hrs, SII 17hrs and OIII 26 hrs Ha 40min subs bin2, SII and OIII 40min subs bin2.

This is a borrowed description
Henize 70 (N70, DEM L301) is part of the Large Magellanic Cloud in the southern constellation of Dorado about 170,000 light years distant. Henize 70 is a superbubble in which fast, energetic stellar winds from massive, hot stars (OB association LH 114) clear out a bubble from the surrounding interstellar medium. You can see a group of hot blue stars near the center of the bubble. The energy released into the bubble ionizes elements, such as hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur, and causes them to glow. It has also been suggested (Skelton et al., Pub Astro Soc Pac, III, 465-481, 1999) that supernova explosions within the last million years also contributed to the structure of the nebula. The nebula is about 300 light years across.

And it's got stars in it too... what's going on? A weak moment?

Well done, Fred! Someone has to have a go at these things. It's not a stunning object but it still shows some interesting detail and colour and you have a unique image.

Cheers,
Rick.

Hi Fred. Love the image. If you have the kit and location you may as well go for the hard to do objects because as you say, no one else is. Well worth it in my view.
Top job

You are the mega king Fred. Lots of detail in your image. Not sure about the colour palette, but that is my taste talking here. I am just wondering if you have a couple of subs there that are a little less sharp than the bulk? The focus looks slightly soft to me on the full res.

Fantastic, Fred,

This sort of image would have been utterly impossible a generation ago. I really believe it is worth the effort - the superbubble is special and you've caught it. You've really got the SII nicely.

What is RA/Dec and angular diameter?

Best,
Mike

Thanks Marc. The artifacts were more obvious starless, thats why . I took RGB for stars, but they looked big and messy.

Thanks Allan. Some others are good, but mostly just bright red mono (Ha) or bicolour.

Thanks Greg. Well, 1st, no , but possibly unique in that I took Ha, SII and OIII. Interestingly, IMO, the AAO pic is very ordinary, but that was with film.

Thanks Paul. I tried some other palettes, bright red looks good, had to pick just one. The noise was very high, so smoothing was required and loss of sharpness. Ive noticed a few rock stars would rather leave backgrounds a bit gritty rather than smooth and process the hell out of images. I must say that can look much better.

Thanks Mike. Yes Steves is good, hes done a lot of hard ones over many years. He was the 1st for many.

Thanks Mike, the SII was a hard part, extremely noisy. Others have skipped SII altogether and used Ha for red.

Ah that makes sense. Faint stuff, lovely noise .

Would you use a median combine on each channel? That might kill the noise.

Fred this is by far the best n70 image i have ever seen.
76 hours is a real marathon effort.
I think it was worth it to achieve the best.
