Moon Closeups - Coperrnicus, Plato, Bullialdus, Aristarchus, Gassendi & Highlands

Hi everyone,

Earlier in the week when I imaged Saturn, I went on a bit of a photo spree on the moon to really try out the 120mm camera as the conditions were good - by the time I got on the moon conditions were not as good as for my Saturn shot but still very good.

One of the things that I really like about this camera is the 1280x960 sensor to get nice wide shots - the compromise is that the FPS which came in at around 24fps with a 12.5" f/5, 5 x Powermate and IR685 filter and a new laptop.

Typically for these images, I shot 10,000 frames and stacked 2,000 processed in Registax and using mild deconvolution in CS3.

Lovely series John.

Looking at the plethora of small craters or craterlets you have resolved, scattered along the floor of Plato, it seems hard to believe that just recording the 4 “big” ones was the holy grail of astrophotographers not too long ago!

Cheers

Dennis

PS – just love the bright yellow La Sportiva mountaineering boots. Plastic or CF?

Hi John,

Some great shots. I particularly like your Southern Highlands shot, very effective and quite conservatively processed.

Hi Dennis - these boots are actually leather and good to over 6,000m.

Wow – I thought that leather had been superseded by man-made materials in high altitude boots, although give me leather for comfort and walking any day.

Cheers
