Hot new symposium about spiral & irreg. galaxies

If you click on "scientific program", you can download pdf files of the slides from some absolutely brilliant presentations that were made at this conference, about the very latest research. It is not too hard to go further in our understanding, if we refer to recent scientific papers as are mentioned in these slides.

I have the full writeups of several symposia on disk galaxies that took place during the last 15 years, and my impression is that the field is just now taking a giant step forward...... especially due to the onset of of very long wavelength imaging such as mid-infrared and submillimeter and millimeter, plus the increased sensitivity of the 21 cm line observations (of the cold atomic hydrogen gas) that now enable the detection of circum-galactic and intergalactic gas clouds.

Things are recently getting very very complicated compared to the "rough sketch" view of spiral galaxies that prevailed until the late 1990s!!

Hello there, my fellow galaxies people,

I am particularly finding the first talk, "The Structure of The Milky Way Galaxy" by Robert Benjamin, to be very useful and interesting.

It is extremely comprehensive in its overview of the properties of our own Galaxy, and Benjamin's slides are quite easy to understand..... at least if you have had reasonable prior exposure to plenty of astronomical jargon and if you have previously read some other work about the structure of our Milky Way galaxy.
