I realised today as i walked outside of kfc tonight to grab dinner that I instinctively looked up in search of familiar stars and nebulas... I haven't noticed it before, but when i look back to 'bout 3 weeks, I remember looking out the window checking for clouds... huh... This must be some kind of contagious disease that contracts amateur astronomers...

Nah, but its a useful habit. I used to do a bit of competitive sailing and it wasn't until it was pointed out at a training session for new kids that the first thing I probably did every morning was look at the weather and assess the wind direction and strength and then be constantly aware of it all throughout the day that I realised how much of a habit it had become (when you're sailing you need to be alert for the smallest changes in case you can work it to your advantage on the course). I still do it automatically and I haven't been sailing for 10 years now. I also do something similar with stars and constellations, particularly when driving around at night, which probably isn't the best thing to do when behind the wheel, but I can't help myself!

I always have a look up when I go out, regardless of where I am or what I'm doing. Habit I guess, alright. And only one thought occurs 'would it be a good night with a scope, or not?'.

Funny thing, I remember driving back from Canberra one early evening, and my wife and I both saw a tremendous fireball streak from the top of the windscreen, disintergrating as it went, throwing of chunks, flashing brigther and dimmer and it was quite a distinct green colour. Not the tint of the windscreen near the top as it didn't have any. I wonder what material could have caused such a striking colour on heating, copper?

I also do this a lot and I think its a number of things. One is checking the weather, but even if there's no way I'm going to get the scope out, even if I've just got up for a pee, I still scan the stars. Most of it is that they are just so beautiful. And its also just to "touch base" in a way.

Hehehe me too Leon,
I always look up at night, and when people are with me they always look up to see what I'm looking at and ask ' watcha lookin at?'. If they are interested I tell them ....if not I just say "the stars!!!!"

Yes, I was told the green was copper and yellow was sodium. Space junk tends to be purple, I've noticed. I keep meaning to check on the chemistry of the colours and make sure I've got it straight. Yet another thing to add to the 'to do' list.
