In the Monthly challenge you have IC2606 (southern Pleiades) as an object type of an open star cluster at Mag 1.9. I looked for this object in two different planetariums (skymap and Thesky) and both came up with a spiral galaxy at 15th mag.
Should be NGC 2516 ..
We ended up at the wrong hemishpere of the sky using the GO-TO last night.
An Easy cluster to find following the long axis of the false cross to the south.
A great sight in a widefield low power eyepiece.
Ian, I looked up NGC2516, and that isn't the Southern Pleaides. It's another open cluster in Carina, but not the one we're after.
Also, i've updated the website to include the correct number IC2602, however the chart still has the arrow saying IC2606 - but if you look closely, CDC still has a yellow printed number 2602 next to it.
I'll get Andrew to update the chart when he gets back from holidays.
Thanks Mike
Had a real good look at NGC2516 anyhow.
Rated by some as the best open cluster in the southern sky.
So, Tonight Ill have to have a look at the "True" southern Pleaides.
I've updated the May objects page with links to the appopriate forum threads, and added a note that if you want a printer-friendly view of the page (for printing, obviously ) click the print icon at the bottom of the page.
