Image details

I'd like to propose a change to the "Images & Photography" section in that when you upload an image there is additional information that needs to be completed (per image). This would greatly assist those in understanding the equipment and techniques used to acquire the image.

Items like;
Telescope/Mount/Camera
Exposure length
Date/Time (Local & UTC)
Post processing (if any)

There are probably more items, but we only need the basics in a web form. We don't want to hinder users in uploading their shots, just provide a consistent feel/format.

I'd like to hear the thoughts of others. This is purely a suggestion so if it sinks - I tried, if it floats - great.

Speed setting
Imaging conditions.

Lots of people inlude the info in their image. I would be nice to be able to have the info searchable.

All,

When you upload an image, it appears the EXIF info is stripped from the file.

I use a dedicated EXIF viewer for images displayed inside web pages. I have tried it on files that I know have EXIF data before they've been posted. After they've been posted, they seem to have the data lost.

Is there a routine during image upload which strips the data to reduce the size of the files?

Regards,
Humayun

we arent all experts and some of us just point and shoot and hope for the best, but you will find that most of those who are in the know do post thier imaging details or will release them if someone asks for them

Andrew,

That's the very one I use, as well.

I find it integrates quite well into Mozilla Firefox.

Humayun

Hi Jase, I'll try to remember to add some notes with my images.
Sometimes I am just so happy I've got a good image I just want to share it with everyone so I forget to include some data with it.
It is a good idea because more knowledgable members will be able to help beginners like myself up the the learning curve.

cheers

Adding notes to images using a standard form will be possible in the future. We just need to come up with the best way to integrate it with the forum.

The thumbnail of the image is created dynamically and wont have any exif information. But the actual uploaded image isn't modified in any way. I had a look at some images in the images forum and there is exif information contained in them.

Hi Ric, et'al
My intention was not to have a shot at anyone for uploading an image with no data behind it. I just thought it would be constructive for everyone. Indeed using the EXIF is a great idea. Those not too savy may need another method.

As you pointed out Ric. The knowledge of how the image has been taken and the processing steps can greatly assist beginners. This is what this web site is all about.
