I finally got around to attempting planetary imaging, these are my 1st attempts at Jupiter and Saturn , I do not have a planetary/lunar camera so I tried the DSLR, for some reason I could not get the DSLR camera to take a decent video image to use for processing so i just took several single photos then stacked and processed them.
Jupiter from 13th November 2012
20 x 1/60sec Subs at Iso 200
Stacked in AutoStakkert processed in GIMP
12" LX200 (alt/az)
Sony Nex-3 DSLR Camera
Saturn from 14th April 2013
10 x 1/10sec Subs at Iso 200
Stacked in AutoStakkert processed in GIMP
12" LX200 (alt/az)
Sony Nex-3 DSLR Camera
Hi Wayne nice colours and detail. Suprised you have done so well with a DSLR and with so few frames. With video you need to take 1000's of frames and stack the best. Well done.

Hi Wayne - technical question. Your images are 200+ pixels-worth of planet. Are you using a Barlow lens or something? How are you getting such large planetary images?
Thanks, John, Carl, Bob, Johnny, Laurie, David and Jon, I will try next time with the same settings only with a lot more subs to stack then I will experiment with slightly different settings as you said Bob its in the ball park so my settings must be getting close to optimal for my setup. and yes Jon I used a 2" 2x Televue Powermate to image these planets.

Nice work. It might be worth downloading Registax just to use its wavelet sharpening functions.
It's more than worth it. It's mandatory I reckon Make sure it's the latest version. It's linked wavelett scheme is to die for when used correctly.
So any pointers John as to how to use it correctly? I've tried Jupiter and Saturn with the 640x480 movie crop mode of the EOS 60Da but get nothing but vague fuzz. Theoretically I should get reasonable results but I can't seem to make it happen. Nothing approaching the clarity of Wayne's stack of 20 standard DSLR exposures.
