Rosette nebula and widefield Eta Carina

Hi all
2 more images I took last night and finishged processing.
Rosette nebula, I thought Id try for it as it started to set but was clear of the house from where the scope is.
2 x 10 mins ISO 400, 10 inch F5.6 newt. UHCS filter used, processed in Iris.

Widefield Eta Carina, 50mm F1.8 Canon lens stopped down to F4.5. Also UHCS filter sitting on front of lens. Single 250 sec shot ISO 1600, this time with the in camera noise reduction on. I had to do this because the previous night I couldnt properly subtract the darks with Iris when I took a similar shot, I was left with green spots all over, wether that was because I dont yet have a uv/ir cut filter I dont know. (there was a cluster of green spots in one of the star clusters on the pic?) Anyway the in camera n/r works better for this shot. It was through high cloud as well, I cant wait to try again on a dark clear night. Stopping the lens down gives sharper stars but Im hoing the uv/ir filter may make em even sharper.

ah scott..the rosette was meant to be one of my targets last night..but didnt even get to slew to it before cloud spoilt the party..with a stocj 300D gues it woulnt have been anything like your result I suppose

great shot..is that a satellite trail on the right?

Thanks people, yep was a satellite trail, though I didnt notice it while i was taking the pic.
I cant get the Rosette overhead as the house is in the way, can only get it when its down to about 45 deg. above west horizon and only for an hour or so.

I really like that Rosette Scott.

Bit envious of the time your getting doing imaging atm......keep taking them while you have the opertunity.

I have a trip away next week.

How large is the rosette.....would it be anygood through an ED80 and DSLR regarding images scale.

SN5 doesn't tell me the size.

The rosette is huge (80x60 arc min). The trouble is that it is fairly faint. The ED80 should do a good job.

I,m determined to have a go at this target whilst out at Chinchilla tomorrow night..weather pending...not looking promising....I am also determined to find this target without GOTO...my plan is to draw a line from Betelgeuse to Procyon then draw another across from Sirius to Alhena this will make a chrosshair to work off....then nudge the scope up a little and to the left...Shazam it will appear....lol....sounds good in theory....maybe I will have to push the GOTO button.

Any other tips on finding this Scott....I'm serious about not using GOTO.

Scott, the dirty stopout, has gone to sydney (rumour starting now) maybe to get his mirrors silvered and coated??? he can find just about anything tony , and between him and another NAS member (Denis Zambellis) you pretty much have the sky covered when you go out for a viewing evening, they are walking star atlases. Good value When he return grill him hard

No not getting the mirror done just yet. The rosette is actually easy to find, as though the nebula itself is faint the central cluster isnt, and appears easy in my 50mm finder. To photograph it, just plonk it in the middle of the frame. I was just plain lucky the brighter bit with some Bok globules (or Thackarays Globules as they can be called), the dark globs, was in my field of view
The cluster is almost due west of betelguse but south a bit. Look through the finder, a small tight open cluster slightly rectangular in shape should appear.

regarding my mirror when I do decide to get it recoated the place is apparently in Campsie, I can in theory take a train there. I wont be trusting my irreplacable Sutching 1/10th wave mirror to a courier, I will hand deliver and pick it up myself.

My whole work trip has been a failure...well work hasn't but I was hoping to do some imaging while out at Chinchilla last night around 300KM's west of Brisbane...I am currently in Gympie for the night and it's pouring..I haven't seen any blue sky for 3 days now.....

Your wonderful image Scott really inspired me so I really wanted to give it a go through the ED80.

I should have asked you how to find it through the clouds...who thought of this stupid hobby...I blame you all....grrrrr

Blame myself and Houghy, we both now have modified DSLRs, hence the clouds attacking
Bet they will clear just in time for full moon.
The ED80 will go great on the Rosette, it will frame it in very nicely
