Patriotic emoticon?

May I make a suggestion?

I would like to see a smiling emoticon waving the Australian Flag, maybe similar to the emoticon but with the flag waving?

There are many things to be proud of in this country and the ability to express/emphasize that pride with an emoticon would be bonzer!

Cheers
Chris

Seems like a reasonable idea to me

I'll see if I can find one.

Alternatively if anyone comes across one, send me a link!

Sounds absurd to me - after all it's an astronomy forum and the night sky doesn't belong to anyone. But each to their own I suppose.

Maybe we could give the Kiwis a flag waver too, Aboriginal flag as well, and what about all the other nationalities represented on IIS?

Just my thoughts, time & place stuff...

Maybe we need one with a smiley driving a ute?
Sorry, the Americans have given patriotism a bad name, and the great unwashed here in Aus have taken it up with a vengeance.

Cheers,
Jason.
Who doesn't really have a problem with being proud of his country. Really!

My question is .... why ?

I don't see the point of using patriotic emoticons .... this is Australia , not the USA .

Funny Chris, but from my angle the 4th of July parade is exactly what you're asking for, because that's where flag-waving patriotism belongs.

If waving the Aussie flag did even one single thing towards making us better people or a better nation, I'd be out doing it now!! Unfortunately, it's all-tip-and-no-iceberg stuff.

But as I said, each to their own, my opinions only - that's one of the great things about living in Australia (now where's that danged Aussie flag waving emoticon when ya need it ).

Cheers -

Oh please! What do we need this patriotic evangelism for. Although people express all manner of views on this site, officially the site itself keeps a neutral profile. Lets keep it that way. Every day people visit this site from countries all over the world and from a variety of different religious and cultural background who want to form friendships with fellow human beings and talk astronomy. And what do we want to do? Wave a flag in their face and say (by implication, even if not expressly) were the best. No thanks. To tacky for me.

It's a sad state of affairs when our nation's flag stirs up controversy in our own country!

This is a forum which originated in Australia, run by Australians. The vast majority of members of this forum are Australian. Like Chris said, he requested an emoticon. It's hardly waving the flag in the face of others and telling them you're better than them. Patriotism should never be confused with racism, and intelligent people should know the difference.

I can't believe that anyone would be even the least bit offended by the flag of this great country. Reminds me of a recent news story in which a digger was told by his local council to remove the flag from his front yard as his neighbours considered it offensive. When I read that story I felt the ANZACs turn in their graves.

It's not a sad state of anything, there is only a couple of posts here, in that vain. Let it stay that way please.

Let the mods decide what's best, they know the site.

In my defence, I was just voicing my opinion on a topic I feel very strongly about, not deliberately fuelling the fire.

Before the next persons replies, we have already been warned once by a moderator to keep on topic. I suggest you do so. I believe he meant the "to and fro" arguing which will never get us anywhere

That's it for me in this thread.
