Mike,

You've got a bit of a gradient in that image that you might need to fix with some proper flats.

Coronal mass ejections - though we are at a quite period now back then there were active suspots - er sunspots the UV given off must have something to do with it- can you imagine the size of the auroras around the polar regions

I had hoped to take advantage of my pretty good 'office window' view of the outside world for this year's CWAS twilight theme.

For various reasons the opportunity never presented itself.

That said, with twilight still some 40 minutes away, mother nature displayed this little gem...

Peter,

I've seen those things several times while flying. What are they called, and, why do they occur?

I think you can simulate them in that software called Halo.

Beautiful photograph.

Humayun

Wiki has a good write up

There was also an in-depth piece in Scientific American I read as undergrad back in the 1970's...sorry can't give you the specific issue.

Congrats guys,

I am betting that Houghy won the solar system award with his Moon. A Lunar eclipse won last year and David was most impressed by it. So you might have won houghy. After last year I have no expectations whatsoever. Being mentioned is good.

Congrats again to all the winners.

Thanks Paul, I really think it will be a highly commended as some of the solar system images i have seen from many other people over the past 24months, including yourself, have been brilliant images, assuming of course that they have been entered. Only time will tell?
