Appropriate thread titles

Guys - I guess this is an old complaint but can the moderators jump on stupid lazy and non descriptive threads called for example:

Which?
Help!
Scope
Camera
Problem

They seem to be creeping back in again!

I don't have time to read all these threads so I ignore them which is a pity as there are probably some good posts within.

That used to bug me too. Thread titles such as "wow look at this" potentially make you waste your time before you find out what its about.

On the plus side, the mouseover "Preview Thread Messages" function helps here if you enable it in your user cp in options, "Preview Thread Messages".

Good point Monte, I had noticed it a bit lately. I usually amend them when I remember but a few have slipped by.

Will remind the mods.

How would a genuine beginer looking to purchase a scope and get involved in astronomy or a person with trouble with there equipment title there posts or are we saying that there scattered all around the forums ?......cheers Kev.

Good points.

Generally, if there are a lot of posts to get through and I don’t have the time, patience or energy to work through the list, I tend to ignore those that are least descriptive. I restrict myself to working only with those posts where the poster has taken the time to draft an informative subject line that leads nicely into their post.

The “mouse over” also really helps cut down on non-productive browsing too!

Cheers

Dennis

Everyone is incorrect, there should be much more punctuation used in their posts.

Gotta agree with Monte on this. Sure you can use mouseover which helps - but there have been quite a few 'non descriptive' thread titles around lately - and I think it sorta catches on. Bit annoying.

Ah yes. Thanks Geoff, but keep in mind I'm espousing a live and let live approach to all this...and therefore reserve the right to have my own occasional lapse!!!

I find the spelling abbreviations which have crept in from the mobile phone 'culture' very annoying, but maybe that's just me? Anyway, I don't think any of it is really worth getting too worked up about.

Cheers and clear skies.

Spelling

I have to agree with the mobile phone culture that is creeping in, it gives me the willies! Poor use of punctuation and grammar can be a bit irritating as well, but for some of us it is a case of "ejumacation neva dun me nun gud". We cant all be Rhodes scholars, however, there should be a minimum standard.

True, but the thing is 'minimum standards' is a fairly subjective thing and a lot of it comes down to tolerance.

By profession I am a writer and broadcaster, but when I'm posting on IIS I bring an entirely different set of standards and expectations.

I tend to type faster just to get the ideas out. I'm not really thinking much about grammar etc

I tend to write on forums more in a spoken word style.

It's my feeling that demanding too much in terms of grammar, punctuation etc will end up being intimidating to many people who are really here for friendship and to exchange ideas and so forth rather than penning the great Australian novel.

Anyway, that's just my opinion and you know how the old saying goes about opinions

Hey Matt,

Apologies, just trying for a bit of perspective on it, like yourself. I veer madly between gritting my teeth, and then thinking "that's OK in this environment, who's worried?"

At the end, I thought a bit of a joke about it might be the best thing, after all, what are we all here for in the main?

Cheers

Amazing what things are complained about, given all the other worries in the world.
