Astronomy Associations in Brisbane

I am a beginner astronomer, currently using a 10x50 pair of binoculars and with a 15x70 pair on their way. After experiencing some of the benefits of participating in the amateur astronomy community through IceInSpace, I have decided to investigate some of the clubs in Brisbane with a view to join one.

I was wondering if any locals would be able to help me get a feel for the different clubs?

I have had a look at the websites for the "Astronomical Association of Queensland" and for the "Brisbane Astronomical Society", but I'd really like some more info on the ... vibe.

I'm not really after an endorsement for one or the other, but just wondering if the clubs have different emphases, a particular demographic, are they open to beginners, are they forward looking or backward looking ... that sort of thing.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

AAQ - come along to the next meeting at the planetarium on Saturday the 14th of Oct - 4PM til 6.

We live in the small auditorium on the left as you come in - We're very friendly and visitors are always welcome.

We certainly cater for all experience levels - I think all of the societies do, it's more about which meeting day suits you best. The field nights are great fun too, with plenty of scopes to try out and you don't need your own. Just turn up and say hi to anyone who looks like they know what your doing. If they've got a pommie accent then they're more than likely to be me!

Here's a link to the 4 SE Qld Societies I know of:

http://www.bas.asn.au/links/societies.htm

All are friendly, welcome new people and cater for all ages and levels of experience. I guess it will depend on where you live, and when it is convenient to attend their meetings. Try each one and perhaps?

Cheers

And you could be like many who have joined several.

Of course, the largest active Qld Astro Community has become IIS now - as witnessed by Astrofest this year. Ironic really that the on-line dweebs are the most social in real life. Times are a changin'
