Telescope required for TV Commercial shooting Saturday 18th of October

Hello,

Firstly id like to say thanks for all the help all of you on this forum have given me thus far.

Since I started my journey into finding the right telescope for the directors requirements I have learned a great deal about telescopes, none practical yet still I am wiser from my journey. It appears the telescope he has me looking for is possibly not available. I have found plenty of refractor telescopes but none this big. However in an attempt to give him what he wants, please has anyone seen a telescope like this? And if so, even if you know anyone who has something that resembles it and wishes to rent it to us or bring it to set on Saturday and be paid to do so, will you get back to me.

Thank you

Ant

Hi Ant,

I don't want to sound like a party pooper however I'm afraid you are going to struggle finding a refractor anywhere near that size, if there are any in Sydney it would likely be setup in a permanent observatory and due to their value unlikely worth the risk in transporting it... even with money exchanged.

Something else to consider - due to the value (of even small telescopes/mounts) an owner would really need to be there to set it up/move/ take down. There is no way I would trust a non-astronomer to handle the equipment properly. Obviously for a shoot that could be an entire day.

Good luck though, hopefully something pops up, I look forward to seeing the advert.

Rusty

ps - I knew it was going to be a refractor!

Ant, I agree with Russell, I doubt you're going to find a scope like that that the owner is willing to transport.

If the director wants a scope that looks like that and you're never going to see the lens or any details close up I think your best bet would be to get props to build one from a bit of pipe. They could buy a really cheap refractor and butcher it for the focuser and some little details.

Then you could see if anyone here is willing to loan you a mount, something like an EQ6 looks pretty chunky and they're fairly common. (http://www.sherwoods-photo.com/sky_w...Q6SkyScanL.jpg)

If you used a diameter of tube/pipe that is also used for real telescopes, like 200mm then perhaps you could see if anyone (hopefully the same person who loans you the mount) is willing to loan you some tube rings so you can mount your frankenscope.

Good luck.

This is the scope that would have the best "wow" factor but not really available.

It would be worth sending the whole TV Crew to the telescope for that beauty!

I can provide the pictured scope...an 5" F15 refractor on a modified CAVE Optical Astrola Mount.

I sent a PM with my phone. I'm in North Curl Curl.

I knew when I read Brian's message exactly who he was talking about. For the record that is one impressive looking telescope. Pity its not in Sydney. Regardless thanks for sharing..

Enjoy the stars
