Star Trek 2009 movie, too mainstream

Being a huge trek fan I was somewhat disappointed of the new movie. The first time I saw it I didn't think highly of it but after watching it a few times I didn't mind it at all. The CGI was crazy in it and the story line was decent but it now unfortunately after Star Trek's reboot it has become WAY too mainstream

Anyone here who is a fan of the series of first 10 movies, did you feel the same way as well?

I believe Star Trek as I have known it does not exist anymore and it's a shame. I loved the characters, story lines and the physics behind it all which made it different to your mainstream Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica franchises.

I will continue to watch the new movies they keep pumping out but it will never be the same!

Anyone here thought Star Trek has become too mainstream?

Seems like they copied from Star Wars by going to a prequel. I didn't mind the movie, but my favorites were the next generation series. I have a soft spot for the originals, but time has moved on, and they look too dated now.
I guess if they make a few movies with the new crew, we will get used to them, but I think they should have avoided the prequel idea and gone with an entirely new set of characters as they did with the next generation.
Just as an aside, I was amazed with the Star Wars series at just how good the original 3 movies still look against the 3 prequel movies!

Agreed. I did like TOS movies but TNG were my favourite.

They should have got an entirely new crew and set it after Voyager.

I don't much like JJ Abrams work - he seems to want to make feature films like music videos - over-emphasising visual appeal and suppressing character and plot development.

I read an interview with him about Star Trek where, to paraphrase, he said that the Star Trek series (plural) had been like classical music and he wanted to turn it into rock 'n' roll. To me, that speaks volumes about his approach to making films.

JJ says he cares about the fans, but I don't think he actually knows which fans he's talking about when he says that.

On the one hand, I'm happy that Star Trek is still alive, but on the other, I dearly wish it was being made by someone else.

I largely liked the movie in and of itself. Visually great and I though a few good moment and tips of the hat to other parts of the franchise and a few good lines. "I am not our father" etc.

My problem with it was making a prequel that establishes a very different chain of events to the rest of the franchise in it's entirety, where do they go from here? How for instance do they make anything in future that refers to Vulcan if it has now not existed from nearly the earliest story line in the series? The only thing really set earlier than this would be First Contact, and even that should now be populated by people knowing of the doom of the race.

A messy way to reboot the franchise.

I enjoyed the Star Trek 11 movie.

However I felt that scene with Spock and Uhura in the turbo Lift was out of place.
There was never any suggestion in TOS of such feeling between the two of them.
Even different time lines would explain that one.
I doubt whether gene Roddenberry would have approved.
Would be nice to see what Nicholas Meyer could come up with given the opportunity based on his other ST Films

Cheers Mark

ST11 was a bit of a mixed bag as some have said. If taken by it's self it a good movie but surely has a lot of heritage and history to look up too. I'll be looking forward to the next movie to see if this reboot will be up to the task of the Trek.

Sure miss having a weekly dose of Trek :/

Suspended my disbelief and enjoyed every second of it. Time line is different now and will mean different movies coming from it. Very cool idea.

I liked it. The biggest thing to remember is that the reboot is to get a younger audience into watching it. As a big TNG and Voyager fan some of the plot was lacking compared to the other movies, but for the younger generation of movie goers it was just right to get them into it.

There are a few things about the movie I didn't like (I wont spoil) but they are things I don't like in a lot of movies and are a cheats way out.

Cheers,
Simon

I loved the reboot ST but there were a few scenes that I agree were out of place (In red is one) the other is where Uhura (Student) demanding to Spock (Instructor) she be assigned to the Enterprise. Another scene is where Kirk is trying to get command of the Enterprise from Spock by reason of Spock being emmotionally compromised, that bit of the script dialogue sucked but Spock beating the crap out of Kirk and no one stepping in Is the Federation a military organisation

Still I am hanging out for the sequel.
