Conjunction Colours

Probably about time I posted something in Nightscapes section .

In my mind prior to last weekend, I wanted to capture the colours of the evening conjunction of Mars, Saturn and Spica. Was going to try blur filters etc but lost it in the trees from where my mount was setup while running a workshop last weekend.

So ended up with Plan B which was out-of-focus star trails. First attempt worked well so I tried for a longer exposure.. this is around 20 minutes. Pentax 300mm lens at ~f5.6 on Canon 5D MarkII at ISO100.

Better quality version and a few more details here: http://philhart.com/content/conjunction-colours

Superb and congrats on the APOD! It's one of those photos that when you see it, you think "of course, that's a fantastic idea" / "I know how to do that!"... but I had never thought to do it before seeing it Now I have one more technique to keep in the quiver for when the next conjunction rolls around...
