Another one from the archives. My wife found it on her machine the other day - so thought I'd pop it up.
Taken in moonlight on a work trip to Canada in Dec 2010. I was scouting locations for the Lunar Eclipse the next night and temps were in the low -20Cs. While driving I noticed a couple of light beams pointing straight up and heading towards me and getting bigger. On rounding the bend all was revealed. Car lights! Had never see anything like it (on my first northern winter trip). Further down the road I saw more beams off to the right and stopped to take this shot. It was a very still night and 'diamond dust' was in the air.
"diamond dust" -is that a common expression used for frozen moisture?
when we were kids in Germany, we used to call it something that translates to "arctic snow".
anyway - I like the capture and the story that comes with it, very much.

Yeah, 'diamond dust' is the Canadian term... I think. I really enjoyed that first northern winter experiencing some really interesting weather phenomena. First week it got to -37C and the moisture completely froze out of the air, causing a strange fog. Later in the day you could feel your skin chapping from the extreme dryness. All new for this cold deprived west aussie
