After so many great responses to my shot "Rising Tide" http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...ad.php?t=91345 I thought I would share another shot from the same location.

"Freezing Time"


Canon 5D Mk II
Pro Optic 14mm F/2.8 Lens
Single one hour exposure + one 30 second exposure at the end of the star trail image.

For out, Really like this & totally Dig the concept also Greg, not many do it actually, yet it is so inspiring ? I did similar with a barndoor mount back in the '90s, it could track east and west, Had a film camera with slide film and a manual lens, track for 2mins fully open, drop the cap on, switch to westward tracking for a minute, step the apeture down to F15 and lift the cap for another 15mins, only the bright stars left trails, eg the sth cross or orion etc !

Thank you so much Mike I really appreciate that from you. I don't have a version without the trails for this shot (other than the shot straight out of the camera). The trails where blended early on in my processing steps so I would need to go back to square one. I was going to say that you could see a similar shot from the same location, of the Milky Way without the trails in the linked thread, but I just noticed that you had already seen "Rising Tide".
I will probably have one or two more images from this location still too come. Stay tuned.

Thank you so much Bob Wow! Thats quite an interesting process you did back in the 90's. I always thought that this sort of image was not possible without blending at least two exposures, but you have got my mind working now. Might have to give that a try one night. I always prefer to do images in one take so to speak.

This takes me back. During the early 80's I was posted to Bonegilla for my initial employment training in the Army at the School of Survey. It was very dark there then and on winter nights the sky had a wonderfull look about it and with the reflection in the lakes surface it always seemed magical to me. I would prefer to see just the image without trails, it has a lovely mood to it and really would make the shot.

My Dad was sent there in around 1952 when he first arrived in Australia from Italia..... as what many would now (and did then) describe as, one of those horrible Aussie job taking imigrants ....how some things never change...

The silver city huts were still there when I was posted to the school of survey. I may well have stayed in the same hut as your dad Mike.
