It happened again

Hi guys and gals,

Some of you may have read a few weeks ago that I was going to cut my tube to accomodate some accessories that I had purchased.

After doing this, and getting some pretty promising results I plugged all my fresh values into NEWT online. It told me that with the legnth of the light cone outside the tube I had no 100% light cone. I played with some values and found that a larger secondary mirror would aleviate this so I ordered one.

Today it came in the mail and filled with excitement I took the secondary out of my telescope to start the transplant. Looking at my old secondary immediately showed some problems. The old one is held in by a moulded plastic holder, not stuck to a flat plate like I assumed it would be. After cursing GSO (something I have become used to in the last few months) I sat with the parts infront of me contemplating what to do next.

I could buy a new secondary holder, but that would take weeks and with afternoon shift starting next week, and the long weekend coming up I didnt want to be without it. I eventually decided the way to go was to cut off the holder at a 45 degree angle and then mount the mirror dirrectly on the stalk. So this is what I did. In doing this I calculated the offset (something that the original one didnt have) and stuck it on there with silicone and some spacers. Now all there is left to do is wait the week for it to dry.

In for a penny, in for a pound I say.

Thankyou for your offer Peter, but my new secondary is 88mm and will not fit in that holder. And that would mean all my hacksawing would be for nothing!

I should also mention that I took 5 flats thismorning with my Exfso light box on as high as It can go (has a dimmer) for 2 seconds with the H-alpha filter in. When I have the new secondary in I will do the same and post them on here for comparison. This way I can be sure that I have a net light gain for my efforts.
