The reason why Ron is because she wouldn't have seen a cent of the money. Being Indian and probably a member of one of the lower castes, it wouldn't matter how much money the film made, she'd never see any profits from it and those of higher caste who may have had something to do with the film would make sure she never saw any money from it.

Not only that, those people that actually made the movie, as far as money goes, would've sold her up the creek for the same reasons...cheap "labour", or in this case a bargain basement actress.

That's so sad

She actually wrote a book too (I was flicking through it the other day).

You'll are forgetting that as a child actress, she is not legally entitled to the money until she turns a certain age. From what I gather, if the mother was a manager (as in the case of Gary Coleman- Different Strokes) then the mother gets to over see the money.

Anyhow, I'm sure that is why Danny Boyle invested some of the money in assets (the apartment) so she could utilise some of this money where needed most- good on him I say.

She added that the family had yet to move into a new apartment paid for by a trust set up by the film's director, Danny Boyle.
Just because she is from a third world country (I am as well- Sri-lanka), doesn't mean she was ripped off blindly. They may poor, but not stupid.
Apologies if I sound a tad aggressive

Slumdog Millionaire is one of my favourite movies (daughter's too) and have watched it countless times and listened to the soundtrack a zillion times. One of the best movies ever made. Depicts India really as it is and brought back many memories as Sri-lanka is very similiar.

I agree with Suzy's comments.
At least Danny Boyle had the good will to set up the trust fund.
from what is reported, it should take care of them till they're 18.

I have been to Mumbai several times and there are scores of movies that make it big but child artists like this are paid paltry one off sums and left to fend on their own. none of this gets reported or is visible to international media.

This particular production treated their child actors a lot better than others, even local ones.

A lot of things take time in India for various reasons. Its a sad truth that things arent always straightforward especially with housing.

Yep....the parents would have legal rights to oversee her financial matters, if she's under age. Just hope her parents are decent people and not after their daughter's money....like some are/were (e.g. Gary Coleman).

True, they maybe poor but not stupid, but they're also hampered by their social standing. Regardless of what the law in India might say, reality is quite different. It is still a socially segregated society and there's not a snowball's chance in hell that if they could get away with it, anyone from a higher caste that was involved with the financial side of the film, in any way, would allow a person from a lower caste to profit from it, especially a kid. Even if they became a success, they would still be thought of as being from that lower caste and they would have to fight tooth and nail to get where they wanted to be.

Lucky for her and her family, Danny was kind enough to setup a trust for them. At least he would make sure she got what she deserved out of the film. But not all film directors/producers are like that.
