Hello all

Just a quick hello and thankyou for all the informative posts/articles. I was in the motions of getting a 'toy' refractor when I came across IIS.

I picked up a Bintel 8inch dobsonian last week. At the first opportunity I took my better half out to the backyard to see what we could see and it was a great sight.

First object was Jupiter with it's moons. I couldn't believe I could see all four moons lined up along with Jupiter! Jupiter had a very faint darkish band in the middle.

We went over to the Orion constellation and caught a glimpse of the Orion Nebula. Wow!!!! I didn't think I'd be able to see nebula being so close to the city.

I'm anxiously awaiting for the next opportunity to have a look at Saturn, which looks like Tuesday night according to Skippy weather.

Congratulations on the scope and gald you are both enjoying the views! Good to see that IIS is steering people away from the toys. An 8" dob is a brilliant starter scope and will give years of enjoyment.

Beware of aperture fever especially one you get to Snake Valley and have a look through a big scope!

The dob is not your typical telescope you see in the movies. I had an uphill battle convincing my partner that the dob was the best value for money. And the value shone through when we looked up.

I've just finished putting on some setting circles thanks to the diy article here.

Snake Valley might be a goer down the track.

AS the others have said, well done, the 8" is an excellent Dob - I had one for about 8 yrs till I get the 10", and sometimes I think the views in the 10" are not much better then my trusty 8"er.

Last observing session at SWAG we had 2 12" and 2 8" dobs setup, the 8" ones held their own pretty well as skies were dark. In the suburbs, 12" makes all the difference, even here where LP is nowhere as bad as in Melb, I can find heaps of galaxies with the 12" that just were not visible in the 8". All that being said, there are thousands of objects within reach of the 8 even under poor skies!
