Oh my! That means we get to put faces AND background info to handles (names).
It's just shifted from business to personal.

Three hundred million people use it daily, so it simply must be awful. How dare anything become popular because it connects people. Yes, it's "viral", but it must be by nature to work a damn. I'm not a huge user, but apart from the danger it may pose to impressionable young kids (a problem endemic to the internet itself under certain circumstances), I don't see any real problem in it. Besides, it's the only real way I have of keeping up with real friends of mine that reside all over the world - and for that it's absolute gold. I've never lost total contact with any of them.

I like fb. I've only recently started using it. It's a great way to network with like minded folk.

That's cool, Chris. If it works for people, more power to them. I'm sure I've said that before. I certainly don't begrudge anyone using it for whatever reason.
My reason for not signing up: it's very easy keeping in touch with people when you can count your mates on the fingers of two hands. Therefore, the web site doesn't offer me anything -- no reason to sign up.

Humayun

It was actually a big enough problem at work that they blocked it. From what I've been told, a large number of people were sitting on that web site for a large portion of their day and not working! For an organisation which makes its money by people actually doing work (creating output), it was getting beyond ridiculous.
I bet it's the bane of CIO's across large organisations.

Humayun

I know what you mean about lost productivity, H.
We've also had to ban it at work. On one particular occasion a female newsreader actually missed being in the broadcast booth to read a news bulletin because she was so distracted 'networking'
We also noticed a massive drop-off in output from our more (how can I put this?) .....junior reporters
I don't have a problem with it per se....but it does have its issues. Or more accurately, there are issues with the way some people use it.

I'm in Mike!
Facebook is great for keeping in touch with family and friends that are now living overseas.
If it weren't for that, I wouldn't have joined FB.
