ASIGN Outage

Hi everyone!

Hey I have to really apologise to anyone who has been trying to get onto my DIY pages and the like at ASIGN Observatory.

I recently changed registrars for my domain, only to have the host wipe the entire site from existence. It's gone. No rescuing possible. I have saved all the text and images in a backup, but the framework has been deleted completely, so there's not even a place to put it back.

Luckily, two very talented gentlemen in Sydney have been working with me for the last few months on a new idea, which will be unveiled in full very soon!

The rude deletion has just accelerated our plans but thrown a few things into turmoil. We are frantically trying to rebuild to bring you a better, more fun and interactive, practical, layman's resource that will be aimed at everyday amateurs, like most of us here. I am very excited.

Once again, my sincere apologies for the outage. We are on the case!

Baz.

OMG!! You can trust some people to do the wrong thing. You'd have thought they would've at least told you that they were going to do that and given you the time to rescue enough stuff to do something with.

But it sounds like the new site is going to be bigger and better than ever

Optus Optus Optus just did this to my factory web site and ALL emails.
All after I went into great detail with them.
They said " no problem just buy plan B" and all will be ok.
Looking into suing them

Sorry to hear about the website Barry, but this is WHY it's so important to keep backups.

What was the hosters reason for removing the site content? Are they going to compensate you for the loss? The hosting company would have a backup of your website, they're just lying to you in order to save themselves some work. If they really valued their customers, they'd help you out.

Hosting is my speciality area at work - I do all of the Windows & Linux web hosting, as well as Hosted Exchange and complex DNS at work. My employer has a back up of everything and we'd certainly help a customer out with this sort of problem. But then again, your website would never have been removed without your express written permission ;-) You pay dirt cheap for hosting, this is the sort of crap you get. I see it all the time in my line...

Unfortunately suing won't bring my site back, and it goes against my grain to hurt people, including companies. We all make mistakes and if I want to be forgiven for mine, I need to do the same. I think it's best just to walk away from them and look to the future.

Thanks Barb and David, Yeah, I think it's going to be lots of fun! I can't wait until they are finished the framework and let me loose with all my new content and ideas!

They gave no excuse, and we decided to move away from them. The new host IS using Linux, and the very kind and helpful guys looking after me know what they are doing. I know them personally and I am in good hands. Thanks for your warning though, it is always best to check these things out for the uninitiated.

Still working on it folks, sorry for the delay.

Baz.

Aaah Barry, bummer about the passing of your 'old' site. (No good, but as that fellow with the steel helmet once said, such is life). On the other hand (or cheek) the new site looks great; it's really easy to navigate and the moving astro header is a bit neato!! Look foreward to cruising around the finished product. Congrats.

Wow! That's terrible Barry. There's no service left in the industry Last year one of the data centres in Houston had a major electrical fire. 10000 servers down and countless websites offline. I took it on myself to migrate 70 websites at my cost within 72hours to another centre in Dallas - over the phone. Probably slept 5 or 6h in 5 days. I must be a sucker When I see people doing what they did to you I'm seeing red mate. You're better off without them.

Thanks Marc, yeah, I didn't even bother chasing them. Once I checked everything out and found my account completely empty of all, I weighed our impending direction and work in progress against the effort of witch hunting a server i was going to leave anyway and decided past is past...not worth the extra sleepless nights.

Thanks Kerie! I hope everyone finds it a pleasurable experience to tap into this resource. Yeah, I like the "neato" Header too...it's a bit different..

Great to hear the positive news Baz....and yep it looks fantastic!

Telstra have kindly given us users until August to remove our
personal webpage content before they shut it down.
It can remain working of course but for additional fees

This service was always 'free' as part of your subscription to
Telstra, but they have now seen fit to discontinue it.
I've always kept a backup anyway but it's frsutrating having to move
it elsewhere every few years and inform everyone of broken links etc.

Progress I suppose

BTW Baz, I'm about to attempt motorising the dome rotation.
Did you find the method you used ok? I have seen some other
ways it's done. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

regards,

Steve

Oh, there is service left in the industry, you just have to go to the right ISP. My bosses have taken calls from residential customers about ADSL issues at 3am in the morning. You find me another ISP in Australia that does that.
