Nexstar EQ mount problem

I have a nextsra 4gt which I want to set up as an EQ mount instead of just Alt/Az. It has a wedge tilt plate which I have adjusted to my latitude of 35 +.. degrees, took it outside and made sure the mount arm was pointing at the SCP. A did a two star align as the manual suggested this was the only option in EQ mode. It has failed twice. I know the stars I have chosen to laign are correct.
My questions are
1. do I have to be perfectly aligned on SCP for the align to work?
2. does anyone know of a setting I have to change in the software to tell the mount it is in eq mode?
(the only software function I could find was the tracking rate - which I have adjusted to EQ -south.

I also checked my lat/long. and date time - all appear to be correct
Any suggestions would be helpful, or suggestion whee I might find an answer. thanks

Hi Daniel,

Try pointing it to North instead of the SCP. I do that with my Nexstar, and it works just fine.
