Telstra CDMA

Is the story that Telstra is closing down their CDMA network late January 2008 factual, or just Telstras way of pushing one into a new service???

I've always told my wife and my parents (who both had CDMA phones) that they can't possibly close it down yet, as there's not equivalent coverage in remote areas.

Apparently the Govt haven't signed off on Telstra end-Jan date yet, so it still may not happen yet.

as far as i know the Libs were holding back on approving the close down of the CDMA
now that Lab is in - who knows what will happen
but i would suggest to not panic, and change over just yet

That's WHAT TELSTRA WANTS YOU TO DO to advance their argument for the close down of it.

My phone is a CDMA and I have been resisting changing it up to now. Its starting to play up (shuts down at the most inconvenient times) so the Mrs has got me a new one for Christmas, an Optus one . I'm afraid Telstra's antics and steep charges for services (e.g. ADSL) have soured me on them. I don't know if the coverage with Optus will be any better in the country though.

not a waste of time - i found out they have a new phone out with big buttons that makes it easy for us old blind folk to manage.

I work in the ICT industry and have it on very good authority that it is happening, I dont doubt it one bit, move carriers or buy a new phone soon.

I think Telstra calling us up at all hours trying to get us to switch over to NextG is bordering on harrassment!
Not only that they are telling customers that Nokia phones arent as good as LG or other such brands, little do the public know that Telstra are being paid a kick-back by the phone companies to sell their product and Nokia won't take part in that......
I have fitted lots of LG car kits for customers that have told me that, i refuse to believe that Nokia make bad phones! I have had my current CDMA for the last 3 years!!!!

My Nokia 1610 may be the size of half a brick but it's reliable and I'm still on the original $10 plan with Telstra, I must be the last one in Oz still on it.

I dont have a clue as to what the coverage is, I suppose it's CDMA . I can't stand the new phones they are to small and I can't even press the buttons properly.

I work quite closely with Telstra and am 80% sure that it will be happening.

As for the different models- it is not that Nokia phones are worse than LG or Samsung but telstra have three classes of NextG phones (A, B, C)- I assume it is based upon the reception each phone.

Group C is recommended for remote areas, whereas Group B is for areas directly around regional centres/towns.

There is an LG, Samsung and a telstra branded phone in Group C, whilst the Nokia NextG phone is in Group B.

My partner is on the $10 plan with Telstra. They've tried hard to get her to "upgrade". Recently they forced us to change it to monthly billing rather than quaterly, "because it's what our customers want" . So now I have to do a $10 transaction every month

I understand that i'd be needing a group C phone, but i am led to believe that Nokia are releasing a new phone soon to cover that hole!

PS....i HATE it when Telstra call me at 7pm when im having dinner trying to convert, i feel like telling them to POQ!

Thanks a lot, that still doesn't get my wife of my back to get a new phone

They too put me on a monthly bill, and I am still on a $10 monthly plan.
On my last bill they included a lot of advertising re closing down CDMA and even printed in large letters on my bill the same thing. Haven't had any phone calls as yet.

It's just that I don't really want to spend the extra money on a new phone if it is not absolutely necessary

Gazz, good idea but you've got to be careful there. I remember reading something in the Telecommunications Act a while back about the uses/misuses/abuse of the system and how telstra (maybe others?) can have charges laid by the police for acts such as that.

Nokia have released the E51. I am not sure that it is a "Group C" phone, though.
having said that, I have a nokia CDMA phone that was able to pick up a slight signal on the murray where I did not expect one. I suspect that the NextG network would be better than that.

of course, I would like coverage in the middle of nowhere for my bushwalks but I suspect I would have to be pretty lucky.

I was looking at the T165 or the LG 550 phone but the E51 may be the go.

I am tempted by the E51, anyway, as I like Nokia phones. Plus, I would like a wired car kit not a bluetooth jobby.

I will try to find out if the E51 is a Group C phone.
