Early Sunday morning July 29th on day 2 of the ALPO Summer Conference in the US, the 2023 recipient of the Walter H. Haas Observers Award was announced. This is one of the most prestigious international awards an amateur astronomer can receive from their peers. This year it was awarded to an ex- Broken Hill mine worker, who would have thought it possible. Have attached the YouTube link which includes the award presentation followed by the keynote speech. The award presentation starts 13 minutes 40 seconds into the video and runs about 12 minutes. This international award sits nicely with last year’s Berenice and Arthur Page Medal.
Congratulations Trevor a well deserved award in recognition of your dedication to planetary imaging. Your Saturn images are always a pleasure to look at.
This is coming from someone who still in nappies as far as planetary imaging is concerned but have some idea of what is involved.
Thanks very much, Jeff, Dennis, Warren, Gary, David and Steve. it was quite a shock and incredibly humbling to hear the news of this award from Tim Robertson.Tim had contacted me to do one of his monthly ALPO "Observers Notebook" podcast via zoom and at then end of the interview told me about the award and it really did floor me. Quite unexpected really.
Yes I saw your story on ABC, what a true legend you are, I’m sorry but it puts all the image fiddling here to shame, yours is a truly useful contribution to science! Well image fiddling is still beautiful and intriguing, but you’re the MAN! I shall enjoy reading up more on your exploits . May you continue on
Hi Gary, the ABC sent out a link to me yesterday when the story went online. They also sent mp3's of the interview they did with Fred and also Tim which will be nice things to keep in my archive. It has been incredible this last few years. Such a humbling experience.
